대학생 자원봉사활동과 공동체의식에 관한 연구 = A Study on the University Students’ Voluntary Activities and Sense of Community

The voluntary activity is the important thing that can supplement society’s human·material resource scarcity. The more complex the society is, the more important the activity is. The sense of community is restoring humanity, enhancing the responsibility, cherishing citizenship, sacrificing oneself for the community through the mutual solidarity. There is a growing need for the sense of community in the current generation overflowing with egoism and individualism. This study is about the present condition of the undergraduate students’ voluntary activities and the relation of the voluntary activity factors and sense of community.
I collect the data from 5 universities(University of Seoul, Hanyang University, Hanyang University ERICA Campus, Kyung Hee University, Kyung Hee University Global Campus) that manage voluntary activity course. The research subjects are the university students they are now doing voluntary activity club. I selected them for collecting questionnaire and gained 112 data. For the data analysis, I carried out frequency analysis, descriptive statistic analysis, correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis through SPSS 19.0 program.
The analysis results are as follows.
First, the undergraduate students are in a difficult situation due to class, exam period and getting a job.
Second, before entering university, most middle·high school students’ purpose of voluntary activity is to gain a grade. But most university students’ purpose is the selfless thing.
Third, the university students’sense of community appeared high.
Fourth, the purpose of the university students’ voluntary activities has two kinds of purposes. One is the selfless purpose that help the worst situation. The other is the selfish ones that are for new experience, making good use of one’s free time, expanding personal relationship. A selfish purpose’s proportion is higher than that of selfless thing.
Fifth, among the university student’s voluntary activity experience factors, ‘the will for the sustained voluntary activity’ and ‘the participation positiveness’ affect the sense of community more, but ‘the past voluntary activity experience’ and ‘the voluntary activity course’ do not.
Sixth, in the effect on the sense of community, the voluntary activity satisfaction factor’s proportion is higher than that of the other factors, and among the subordinate factors of satisfaction level ‘need to provide future return’ and ‘need for social approval’ affect the sense of community highly.
On the basis of this study, I duly suggest the following solution to vitalize university students’voluntary activities and to improve the sense of community.
First, the university students’voluntary activities have to consider their class, exam period and getting a job. Both selfless and selfish purpose can make the occasion for the voluntary activity. Therefore, their voluntary activity’s selfish purpose should be dealt with significantly too.
Second, among the university student’s voluntary activity experience factors, ‘the will for the sustained voluntary activity’ and ‘the participation positiveness’ affect the sense of community, but ‘the past voluntary activity experience’ and ‘the voluntary activity course’ do not. Therefore, for improving university students’sense of community, it is important to plant ‘the will for the sustained voluntary activity’ and to improve ‘participation positiveness’ through the voluntary activity.
Third, in the effect on the sense of community, the voluntary activity satisfaction factor’s proportion is higher than that of voluntary activity experience factors, and among the subordinate factors of satisfaction level, the ‘need to provide future return’ and the ‘need for social approval’ affect the sense of community highly. For improving university students’sense of community, the voluntary activity must be arranged in the direction of enhancing student’s satisfaction, and especially satisfying the ‘need to provide future return’ and the ‘need for social approval’ among the subordinate factors of satisfaction level.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

자원봉사활동은 현 사회의 인적·물적 자원 부족을 보완해 줄 수 있는 중요한 활동으로 사회가 복잡해질수록 중요성이 점점 커지고 있다. 공동체의식은 집단에서 상호 연대 등을 통해 인간성을 회복하고, 책임감을 강화하며, 사회 구성원을 소중히 여기고, 집단을 위해서 자신을 희생할 수 있는 의식으로 이기주의와 개인주의가 팽배한 이 시대에 필요성이 증대되는 것이라 할 수 있다. 본 연구는 갈수록 중요성이 커지는 자원봉사활동과 공동체의식에 대하여 대학에서 봉사동아리 활동을 하고 있는 대학생을 대상으로 자원봉사활동 실태에 대해 알아보고 자원봉사활동 요인과 공동체의식과는 어떤 연관성이 있는지 알아보고자 한다.
이를 위해 수도권에 위치한 사회봉사 수업을 실시하고 있는 5개 대학(서울시립대, 한양대, 한양대 에리카, 경희대, 경희대 국제)에서 봉사동아리 활동을 하고 있는 대학생을 연구 대상자로 하였다. 설문지는 대학생 봉사동아리 활동자를 대상으로 실시하였고, 112부를 분석에 사용하였다. 분석은 SPSS 19.0에서 빈도분석, 기술통계, 상관관계분석, 다중회귀분석을 통해 실시하였다.
분석 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다.
첫째, 대학생의 자원봉사활동은 수업이나 시험기간, 취업 등 대학생의 특수성으로 인해 어려움을 느끼는 것으로 나타났다.
둘째, 대학에 오기 전 봉사활동은 순수한 목적보다는 학교 수업에서 봉사 점수 등 필요에 의해서 한 경우가 많았지만, 대학에서의 사회봉사수업을 수강하는 이유는 학점이나 취업 등 필요에 의해서라기보다는 순수한 목적으로 봉사활동을 하기 위해서가 높은 비율을 차지했다.
셋째, 대학생 봉사동아리 활동자의 공동체의식의 수준은 높은 것으로 나타났다.
넷째, 대학생의 자원봉사활동은 어려운 이웃을 돕고 싶은 이타적 목적과 새로운 경험이나 여가활용 및 대인관계를 넓히기 위한 이기적 목적이 병행하여 나타났으며, 이기적 목적이 차지하는 비율이 더욱 높았다.
다섯째, 대학생의 자원봉사활동 경험 요인 중 봉사지속의지와 참여적극성이 공동체 의식에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났지만, 과거봉사경험이나 사회봉사수업수강은 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타났다.
여섯째, 자원봉사 만족도 요인은 다른 요인에 비해 공동체의식에 미치는 정도가 상대적으로 높게 나타났으며 만족도를 구성하는 하위 요인 중 사회적 교환과 사회적 인정이 공동체 의식에 미치는 영향이 높게 나타났다.
이러한 연구결과를 기초로 하여 대학생의 자원봉사활동을 활성화 하고 공동체의식 향상을 위해 다음과 같은 방안을 제시하고자 한다.
첫째, 대학생의 자원봉사활동 진행시 수업시간이나 시험기간, 취업 준비 등 대학생의 특수성 측면을 고려하여야 한다. 또한 이타적 목적과 이기적 목적 모두 자원봉사활동의 계기로 나타났으므로 대학생의 이기적 목적도 중요하게 여기는 방향으로 발전해야 할 것이다.
둘째, 자원봉사활동 경험 요인 중 봉사지속의지와 참여적극성은 공동체의식에 영향을 미쳤지만 과거봉사경험과 사회봉사수업수강은 영향을 미치지 않았다. 그러므로 대학생 공동체의식 향상을 위해서는 과거의 경험보다는 미래에도 계속 봉사활동을 하겠다는 지속의지를 심어주는 것이 중요하고, 사회봉사수업을 통해 봉사활동을 진행하기 보다는 대학생 스스로가 원하는 봉사활동을 통해 참여적극성을 높이는 방향으로 진행되어야 할 것이다.
셋째, 자원봉사 만족도는 자원봉사 경험 요인에 비해 상대적으로 공동체의식에 미치는 영향이 컸으며, 만족도의 하위 요인 중에서는 사회적 교환 욕구와 사회적 인정 욕구가 영향력이 높게 나타났다. 그러므로 대학생의 공동체의식 향상을 위해서는 자원봉사활동이 개인의 만족도를 높이는 방향으로 진행되어야 하며, 특히 사회적 교환 욕구와 사회적 인정 욕구를 충족시켜주는 방향으로 나아가야 할 것이다.
