This study aims to develop a pre-treatment technology for the safe disposal of spent adsorbents generated during nuclear power plant decommissioning, particularly those containing radioactive carbon-14 (C-14) in the form of carbon dioxide (CO₂). Previous studies on desorption behavior have often relied on idealized conditions, such as high-temperature thermal treatment above 400 °C or vacuum environments, which limits their applicability to actual operational scenarios.
In this research, zeolite 13X was selected as the adsorbent due to its high CO₂ selectivity and structural stability. A Temperature Swing Adsorption (TSA) process was employed to experimentally analyze CO₂ desorption behavior under thermal conditions ranging from 210 to 250 °C. The experimental apparatus was custom-designed to allow precise temperature control and real-time CO₂ concentration measurement. A purge-assisted heating protocol was used to partially simulate the conditions of spent adsorbents in field operations.
The results showed a gradual increase in desorption capacity with rising temperature. Notably, even under moderate heating conditions, without the use of vacuum or extreme thermal activation, a sufficient level of desorption performance was achieved, demonstrating the feasibility of more practical pre-treatment scenarios. This study provides fundamental data for establishing desorption-based pre-treatment criteria for spent adsorbents containing radioactive C-14 under non-ideal but realistic conditions. It is expected to contribute to improving the efficiency and technical advancement of volume reduction and stabilization processes in future radioactive waste management.
