Art Education Program for Understanding Cultural Diversity Focused on the IB MYP (International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme) Shin So-Young Advisor : Prof. Hyeong-Sun Moon Major in Fine Art Education Graduate School of Education, Chosun University Understanding cultural diversity plays a crucial role in helping students develop an attitude of respect and inclusion toward different cultural backgrounds. Through this, students can learn the foundation of mutual respect and cooperation in a global society, while also enhancing their ability to solve problems creatively with a broader perspective. Art education plays a significant role in promoting this understanding of cultural diversity. Art offers students a unique opportunity to visually explore and express different cultures and values, helping them naturally accept various cultural elements and express them through their artwork via a sensory and creative learning approach. The aim of this study is to enhance students' understanding of cultural diversity through an art education program and to foster their ability to respect diverse cultural backgrounds and creatively express themselves. By using art as a medium, the program focuses on providing students with opportunities to learn about artistic differences across cultures through visual expression and, based on this, to engage in original creative work. Through this process, students naturally come to understand cultural differences and develop the ability to positively embrace cultural diversity through artistic creation. This research developed an art education program based on an understanding of cultural diversity and aligned it with the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) 2nd-year art curriculum. The program was applied in actual classes, demonstrating the importance of cultural diversity education in art education. The significance of this research lies in its academic contribution, showing how art education can offer students opportunities to understand diverse cultural backgrounds, express themselves creatively, foster cultural pride, and learn respect for other cultures. Additionally, this study presents a new educational model combining the IB MYP framework with cultural diversity education, offering future directions for school art education and cultural diversity education. In art education, cultural diversity education is an essential process that helps students develop the ability to understand and respect diverse cultural backgrounds and express them creatively. Providing opportunities for students to reflect cultural differences naturally and respect diversity is of utmost importance. This study was designed to help students learn about cultural diversity in social and historical contexts and develop the ability to apply it in real life, actively incorporating cultural diversity into the curriculum. Future research may extend the program’s effectiveness to students of various grades and cultural backgrounds. In particular, as Korean society becomes increasingly diverse, the role of art education, especially visual arts, is crucial. Unlike other major subjects, art education provides students with the opportunity to freely express their individuality, helping them expand their knowledge of different cultures and enhance their ability to understand various cultural backgrounds. Therefore, it is necessary to explore how to apply cultural diversity education more widely, reflecting the characteristics of art education, and find ways to improve students' cultural understanding and respect.
