Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the structural effect of work–life balance on the quality of life of parents raising elementary school children and to investigate the parallel mediating effects of resilience and family strengths in this relationship. Focusing on parents whose children use Dadahamkke Care Centers, this study explored the pathways through which their quality of life is shaped as they coordinate the demands of work, child-rearing, family life, and personal life.
A survey was conducted among parents raising elementary school children who use Dadahamkke Care Centers in Gyeongsangbuk-do, South Korea. Data from 223 participants were included in the final analysis. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 26.0 and AMOS 26.0. The analyses included frequency analysis, descriptive statistical analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and structural equation modeling. The specific indirect effects of resilience and family strengths were examined using bootstrapping and phantom variable modeling.
The major findings were as follows. First, work–life balance had a significant positive effect on quality of life. This finding indicates that parents who perceive themselves as effectively coordinating the demands of work, child-rearing, family life, and personal life are more likely to evaluate their quality of life positively. Second, work–life balance had significant positive effects on both resilience and family strengths. Third, resilience and family strengths each had a significant positive effect on quality of life. Fourth, resilience and family strengths each significantly mediated the relationship between work–life balance and quality of life. In addition, the partial mediation model, which included the direct path and the two indirect paths, showed a better fit to the data than the full mediation model, in which the direct path was excluded.
This study is significant in that it focused on the quality of life of parents using public after-school care services and examined the structural relationships among work–life balance, resilience, family strengths, and quality of life within an integrated model. In particular, resilience was conceptualized as a psychological adaptive resource at the individual parent level, whereas family strengths were conceptualized as relational and functional resources at the family-system level. This distinction provided an integrated explanation of the process through which parents’ quality of life is shaped.
The findings suggest that improving the quality of life of parents whose children use Dadahamkke Care Centers requires not only the quantitative expansion of care services but also support for environments that enable parents to coordinate their work and family lives, strengthen their psychological and emotional resources, and enhance family communication and role coordination. Therefore, Dadahamkke Care Centers should establish an integrated support system in collaboration with local family support agencies and professional organizations to provide parent education, psychological and emotional support, family communication programs, and assistance with the coordination of family roles.
