This study examines the influence of teamwork on organizational effectiveness of the Mental Health Center which is one of the places practicing the mental health that require an integrative approach through team cooperation among professionals in supplying high-quality service to clients. In addition, the purpose of this study is to indirectly offer plans for managing teamwork and role conflict effectively, leading to the increase in organizational effectiveness of the Mental Health Center, by setting as a parameter a role conflict that can occur when professionals from different fields work as a team and then observing how this parameter influences organizational effectiveness in this process.
For this study, a self-administered survey was implemented by mail to 228 mental haelth professionals who work in sixty four centers nationwide. As a result, a total of 183(80.3%) questionnaires were collected and used for the final analysis. The collected data were analyzed with SPSS WIN 12.0 program.
The following is a summary of the major results from this research:
First, the average level of teamwork among mental health professionals were slightly higher than general, with role conflict a little lower and organizational effectiveness somewhat higher. Of the subordinate variables of organizational effectiveness, job satisfaction and organizational commitment showed a slightly higher level than general; on the other hand, the intention to change occupation was lower than average.
Second, the role conflict in accordance with demographic characteristics only showed a significant difference regarding job position. The organizational effectiveness with regard to demographic attributes indicated a significant difference in age group and marriage condition. Also, when it comes to the subordinate variables of organizational effectiveness, job satisfaction showed a significant difference in marriage condition and annual salary with organizational commitment in age group and intention to change occupation in marriage condition and job position.
Third, the influence of teamwork on role conflict and its subordinate variables - the cause and level of conflict - was negative, while the impact of teamwork on organizational effectiveness and its subordinate variables - job satisfaction, organizational commitment and intention to change occupation - was positive.
Fourth, the influence of role conflict on organizational effectiveness was negative and the subordinate variables of role conflict and organizational effectiveness showed a significantly negative correlation.
Fifth, in the process where teamwork affects organizational effectiveness, it was shown that role conflict functioned as a partial mediator.
By understanding the influence of the Mental Health Center’s teamwork and role conflict on organizational effectiveness, the above research results have its significance as the basic research about the teamwork which needs to be pursued in organization management for organizational effectiveness improvement; and also the results draw social welfare implications such as follows:
First, to minimize the role conflict in the process of teamwork, it is necessary not only to share and exchange sufficient business information based on the understandings about other professions but also to communicate interactively within an organization.
Next, to solve the conflict that can occur inside an organization, an organizational effort is needed to address several issues such as supplement of labor power and adjustment of employee compensation for overwhelming workload, and establishment of a promotion system, and etc.
Finally, it is needed that the settlement of the problem in employment instability, which the employees of the Mental Health Center are concerned about, will lead to the decrease in the rate of occupation change, in order to secure competent human resources to offer highly professional services to clients.
