The purpose of this study is to propose the theory and practice of christian worldview education for the next generation. A christian worldview education is to help the next generation live a life in accord with a christian worldview in their own lives.
The first step to prepare christian worldview education is to examine history and direction of christian worldview movement. In enlightenment age, secularism as a worldview had an impact on people's everyday lifestyle. Thus christians such as James Orr and Abraham Kyper tried to resist secularism by living with biblical worldview. These efforts became the origin of christian worldview movement. Therefore christian worldview education should be based on essence of christian worldview movemet.
This movement is confronted with postmodernism although the movement was started in modern age. Thus the movement needs six directions to consider the situation of postmodernism. First, the meaning of worldview should be understood not only as a concept but also as a heart. Second, competition of worldview should be recognized not only as a argument but also as spiritual warfare. Third, worldview should be understood not only as a theory but also as a practice. Forth, worldview should be understood not only as a proposition but also as a story. Fifth, worldview should be not only as a personal story but also a communal story. Sixth, worldview education should be focus on not only adult but also next generation.
This six directions for christian worldview movement provide six principles for christian worldview education. First, christian worldview education should be become a holistic approach. Second, it should be based on spiritualty. Third, it should be aimed for practice in everyday life. Forth, it should be transferred to a story. Fifth, it should be connected with community. Sixth, it should be considered the needs for the next generation.
The essence of christian worldview movement and six principles for the christian worldview became a foundation for a theory of christian worldview education for the next generation. Thus the purpose of christian worldview education is to help the next generation live for the glory for God, the love for others, the care for the world through practicing God's word in their everyday life. It is urgent to educate a christian worldview for next generation because they live in the barren environment have a christian worldview in spite of the important period to form a worldview.
Therefore christian worldview education for the next generation has six objectives of education. First is to think and live as a christian. Second is to take after the character of Jesus Christ. Third is to live as a disciple of Jesus Christ in the age of media. Forth is to find and prepare God's calling. Fifth is to study for the glory of God. Sixth is to live as a steward for the kingdom of God.
There are six instructional methods for christian worldview education. First method is to make full use of different learning types to consider individual nature of a student. Second method is to connect with a spiritual training such as the bible study and the prayer training. Third method is to think and live personally by coaching. Forth method is to teach for understanding a christian worldview easily through story. Fifth method is to educate through the community such as family and church. Sixth method is to consider the needs of the next generation by solving their problem through a christian worldview.
The theory of christian worldview education becomes a key foundation for the practice of christian wordview education. Real application instances also become a important foundation for a reality of christian worldview education.
As international institutes for christian worldview education, there are summit ministry, worldview academy, labri and so on. They are already helping young people think and live in accord with a christian worldview through educational programs, curriculums, community life and so on. However most of them focused on apologetics to demonstrate christian worldview as the truth further than a guide to practice a christian worldview.
As an institute for christian worldview education in Korea, there is a christian worldview education center. This institute developed worldview curriculums that help children live with a christian worldview in their everyday life. This institute is applying instructional methods mentioned already. However, a task in this institute remains to develop worldview curriculums for youth and parent.
Finally, christian worldview education for the next generation should go forward in the six direction to follow the essence of the christian worldview movement and to coincide with the postmodern situation. First, christian worldview education should apply holistic approach to think, feel, and decide in accord with the biblical worldview. Second, christian worldview education should be integrated with disciple training such as bible study and prayer meeting to be filled with the Holy spirit. Third, christian worldview education should train parents that teach and coach their children how to think and live with a christian worldview. Forth, christian worldview education should teach through storytelling to understand the concept of a worldview. Fifth, christian worldview education should promote the environment that family and church corporate with each other. Sixth, christian worldview education should try to prepare the next generation as workers for the kingdom of God.
Therefore christian worldview education for the next generation will be not only a key foundation to pass down the truth to next generation but also one of the most important tasks for the christian worldview movement.
