In spite of the radical enhancement of Web technologies, many users still continue to experience severe difficulties in navigating Web systems. One way to reduce the navigation difficulties is to provide context information that explains the current situation of Web users. In order to investigate the effect of context information, we used two major methods: experimental study and field study. In the study 1, we developed the contextual navigation aids by changing link properties, and then empirically examined the effect of two types of context information, structural and temporal context. In our experiment, participants answered a set of post-questionnaires after performing several searching and browsing tasks. The results of the experiment reveal that the two types of contextual navigation aids significantly improved the performance of the given tasks regardless of different web systems and different task types. Moreover, context information changed the users navigation patterns, and increased their subjective convenience of navigation. In the study 2, we suggested the contextual navigation metrics, and then investigated the relationships between user satisfaction and the contextual link attributes. In a field study, participants were asked to complete a questionnaire aimed at assessing their perceived quality of Web sites. Then, we evaluated 80 sites based on the 44 objective features of the contextual links using a binary scoring method. Similar to the results of experimental studies, all of the results of field study indicate that contextual links have a power role in navigation convenience and perceived satisfaction. This study concludes with implications for understanding the users navigation patterns and for developing effective navigation systems.
