Recently, due to a decrease in the number of students, school users and increase in the number of universities, providers by easiness of university establishment, a lot of universities compete fiercely for students and try to raise the education standards, the welfare and its satisfaction level, which was hardly found.
In this point, an empirical study was conducted by a survey of current students, considering it more suitable for the improvement of current education services to look for the estimation of students, direct user than that of specialized organizations which have estimated university education so far.
This research was performed with comparison between nation/public universities and private universities, setting five items of professor’s service quality and ten factors of administration and curriculum services, etc to be independent variables and general satisfaction level and loyalty level to be dependent variable, in order to mainly examine the quality of education services.
The summary of results from these empirical analyses is as follows.
First, the analysis on how students’ satisfaction can be affected by the education service quality of nation/public universities and private universities shows the following result. In private universities, the contents of major directly related to study and school’s influence, administration services and credibility in professors’ records could affect their satisfaction, while in nation/public university, the students was more interested in employment programs than in professors’ credibility and reactivity.
Second, the following is the result of analysis on how students’ loyalty can be affected by education service quality of nation/public universities and private universities. In private universities, administration services and the contents of major and cultural studies influence students’ loyalty, while in nation/public universities cultural studies, professors’ credibility and reactivity, and employment do. Consequently, the contents and services of cultural studies are important both in nation/public and private universities. Therefore, the cultural studies’improvement of contents and quality can be considered as essential in university education in Korea.
Third, an analysis on how student’s satisfaction and loyalty level can be influenced by each other resulted in saying that satisfaction level could affect loyalty in both types of universities.
After considering all the results of research and analysis, it seems that students have quite different thought sand feelings about satisfaction and loyalty according to which type of university they belong to. In particular, private universities urgently need to improve the administration services of their faculties which affect satisfaction and loyalty level; on the one hand, students in private universities may be more susceptible to administration services than students in nation/public universities because the formers pay more school fees than the lasters; on the other hand, faculties in private universities are likely to obey their corporation or president, and to be negligent in services for students, while the students in nation universities could not have great interest in administration services, as their school fees are not expensive and their administration faculties serve them in a way of ombudsman as the public educational personnel and staff not related to their president.
This research is limited by the following restrictions. First, this research has limitation to generalization because the factors suggested here about education service quality were derived only from some students in universities in Seoul and Incheon. These data is, however, considered to overcome previously stated limits since they were gathered from current students in each two of typical private and nation universities marking middle level in Korea. Second, this research measured education service quality of university in student’s view, but the result will be better if another research is attempted in view of professors and faculties and analyzed in comparison with this one.
This research is about how education service quality of university can affect satisfaction and loyalty level, based on SERVPERF measures. If the next research is conducted in a wide range including various students of universities nationwide and obtains strategic guide for universities to provide competitive quality of education services, it will be helpful to increase the competitiveness of university education in Korea.
