한국 대체역사소설의 서사 양상 연구 : 복거일의 『비명(碑銘)을 찾아서, 경성(京城), 쇼우와 62년』을 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

문학의 외연은 계속해서 확장되고 있다. 이러한 가운데, 본고에서 주목한 것은 최근 역사소재의 이야기들이 대중들로부터 관심을 받고 있다는 것이었다. 사극을 시작으로 한 역사소재 이야기들은 21세기에 들어서면서부터 장르를 불문하고 그 영향력을 넓혀가고 있다. 이에, 문학에서도 역사소재에 대한 접근을 본격화할 용의가 있다. 문학에서 역사소재를 본격적으로 다루고 있는 장르는 ‘역사소설’이라고 할 수 있다. 역사소설에 대한 정의들은 기존의 루카치의 ‘역사소설론’에 그 기반을 두고 있다. 하지만 루카치의 역사소설론은 사실주의 문학을 기반으로 하고 있기 때문에 특히 1990년대 이후로 등장하기 시작한 포스트모더니즘 문학을 정의하고 분석하는 데는 적합하지 않다. 때문에 이후의 역사소설들에 대해서는 역사소설의 범위에 포함시키지 못한 채 새로운 형식의 소설로 분석되는 경우가 많았다.
이렇듯 역사소설에 대한 정의들을 다시 설정하는데 있어 ‘대체역사소설’이 가지고 있는 가치는 사실주의 문학에서의 접근성뿐 아니라 포스트모더니즘 문학에서의 접근성 또한 용의하다는 데 있다. 때문에 이러한 대체역사소설이 한국문학에서 보여준 서사의 양상을 파악하는 것은 우리 문학에서의 역사소설에 대한 정의를 확립하는데 반드시 짚고 넘어가야 할 부분이다.
한국의 대체역사소설을 이야기 하는데 복거일의 󰡔비명을 찾아서󰡕를 설정함은 작가가 서문에서 대체역사라는 기법을 사용하여 창작하였다는 것을 명시하면서 다분히 의도적으로 장르적인 특성을 살려 창작한 작품이기 때문이다. 뿐만 아니라 이를 통해서 한국에는 이전까지 생소한 장르였던 대체역사소설이 등장하기 시작했으며, 복거일이 작품을 통해 구현한 소설적 완성도가 높기 때문이다. 때문에 복거일의 󰡔비명을 찾아서󰡕는 한국 대체역사소설의 대표성을 부여할 만한 가치를 가지고 있다.
󰡔비명을 찾아서󰡕를 통해 나타난 한국 대체역사소설의 서사 양상은 다음과 같다. 첫 번째로는 역사적 상상력을 구현하고 있음이다. 이는 사실주의적 소설의 방법론이 적용된 결과이다. 역사를 가정하는 허구가 대체역사소설의 특징이지만 대체역사소설에서는 단순 허구가 아니라 역사적인 가정이 가지는 인문․사회학적 인과관계를 통한 연계성에 집중한다. 이를 통해 대체역사소설은 사실주의 문학에서 말하는 소설문법을 구현하고 있다. 그리고 2000년대 이후로 창작된 대체역사소설들이 이러한 측면을 간과함은 아직까지 우리나라에서 대체역사소설이 본격화 되지 못한 이유라고 할 수 있겠다. 두 번째로는 알레고리 기법의 활용을 들 수 있는데, 본고에서 집중하는 것은 SF에서 알레고리를 사용하고 있음이다. 대체역사소설이 SF의 하위장르로 분류되고 있기 때문에 대체역사소설에서 알레고리 기법이 사용됨은 SF의 장르적 특성이 드러났음을 의미하는 것이다. 세 번째로는 민족의식의 고취를 들 수 있는데, 이는 한국의 역사서사에서 공통적으로 드러나는 특성이다. 민족적으로 격변기를 겪으면서 역사서사를 통해 민족의식을 고취하려는 것은 공통적인 특성이지만 한국이 민족적 격변기를 벗어난 것은 얼마 되지 않았고 󰡔비명을 찾아서󰡕가 창작된 1980년대도 여전히 민주화를 위한 격변기에 있던 시기였다. 하지만 이후로 2000년대를 넘어서면서도 이러한 문제들이 지속적으로 발견되고 있음을 볼 때, 이는 한국의 대체역사서사가 가지고 있는 특성을 대변하는 단면이라고 볼 수 있다.
이렇듯 본고에서는 한국 대체역사소설이 가지고 있는 서사 양상을 파악하면서 한국 대체역사소설에 대한 정의를 다시 진행했다. 이를 통해 역사소설에 대한 정의를 확장함과 동시에 대체역사소설의 기법적 측면이 소설의 방법론적 확장에도 기여하는데 단초가 될 것을 기대한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The outer parameter of literature is constantly expanding. This study focused on the fact that historical stories have been popular among the public. Historical stories, including TV series on epic stories, have been spreading to various genres in the 21st Century. Therefore, literature is interested in approaching historical topics. A genre of literature that deals with historical topics would be ‘historical novels.’ Definition of historical novels is based on Lukacs' ‘theory of historical novels.’ However, Lukacs' theory is based on realist literature and not suitable for defining and analyzing post-modernist literature that began to emerge in the 1990s. Therefore, historical novels after his time have been classified into another genre of novels.
The value of 'alternative historical novels' in redefining historical novels is that they are easy to approach from the realm of realistic literature as well as from the realm of post-modernist literature. Therefore, understanding the epic trends of alternative historical novels in Korean literature is what we must point out in order to define historical novels in Korean literature.
This study chose Bok Geo Il's "Seaching for the Epitaph" to discuss Korea's alternative historical novels because the writer manifests that he employed the technique of alternative historical novel in the preface and intentionally adopted its characteristics as a genre. Moreover, this piece marked the beginning of emergence of alternative historical novels in Korea and Bok Geo Il achieved highly successful literature with this work. Therefore, Bok Geo Il's "Seaching for the Epitaph" can be known as the leading alternative historical novel of Korea.
The following are the epic trends of Korea's alternative historical novels found in "Seaching for the Epitaph": first, they realize historical imagination. This is the result of applying the methodology of realist novels. One of the characteristics of alternative historical novels is to disguise fiction as history, but it is not simple fiction. Rather, it focuses on humanity or sociological causality of historical assumptions. This is how alternative historical novels realize the grammar of novel writing in realist literature. Also, the reason why alternative historical novels created after the 2000s overlook this is because alternative historical novels have not yet become active in Korea. Second, it is the use of allegorical technique. This study focuses on the use of allegory in SF. As alternative historical novels are classified into a sub-genre of SF, the use of allegorical technique in alternative historical novels represents its characteristic as SF. Third, it is the encouragement of national awareness, which is common for all historical epics of Korea. Enduring drastic times, it was a common characteristic of historical epics of Korea to encourage national awareness, but it has not been much long since Korea has come out of the drastic times and the 1980s' when "Seaching for the Epitaph" was created was still a drastic time in pursuit of democracy. Considering that such problems are still being discovered in the 2000s, it can be considered that they mirror some characteristics of Korea's alternative historical epics.
This study explored the epic trends of Korea's alternative historical novels and tried to redefine these novels. Thus, it is expected that it could expand the definition of historical novels as well as the methodological techniques of alternative historical novels.
