This paper conducted a comparative study and literature review of the spirituality and interpretation of Lee Se-jong's kenosis (Κένωσις). Lee Se-jong converted from shamanism to Christianity, and lived a life of extreme asceticism, denying himself thoroughly and pursuing a life that resembles Jesus Christ. He focused on reading the Bible, meditating, praying, and striving for inner maturity. He practiced "emptying" and "self-emptying" in reality in order to be in line with the life of Jesus Christ. He served the poor, shared his wealth, helped them, and forgave their debts. Lee Se-jong's spirituality influenced his contemporary co-workers and disciples to unite faith and practice. His spirituality can be evaluated as suggesting a change in consciousness to challenge the church of this era, which is stained by secularization and dominated by wealth, honor, and materialism, with the spirituality of rebirth.
We must pursue the joy and enjoyment of life that the gospel of Jesus Christ gives, and a balanced spirituality in life. Controlling the desires of the flesh with human power does not liberate us from complete sin. The kenosis of Jesus Christ is life and peace. The gospel does not stop at the cross alone, but is to experience the presence of God that is enjoyed as redemption, salvation, healing, grace, joy, gratitude, and emotion. Therefore, the spirituality of true kenosis should be such that anyone, including male and female servants, Jews, Greeks, the poor, the rich, and the socially disadvantaged, can experience the kingdom of God.
As a result of studying the life of Lee Se-jong from various angles, I would like to reexamine the spirituality of kenosis in this era.
First, the spirituality of kenosis is linked to the concentration on the expression of God’s love. Spirituality is to pursue an orderly life centered on and focused on the Word of God. It is a life that reduces confusion and spiritual disorder in daily life and focuses only on God. Furthermore, it establishes spiritual order by clarifying the direction, balance, and purpose of life through efforts to live according to the Word.
Second, kenosis is deeply connected to the presence of the Kingdom of God. The spirituality of emptiness emphasizes the attitude of life that accepts God's presence and obeys His will. It pursues a life that deeply experiences God's presence and experiences the kingdom of God through that presence. Just as Jesus came to this earth to empty himself of everything and fulfill God's will, Christians must empty themselves of their own greed and ego to experience God's presence more deeply and submit to His will.
Third, kenosis is closely related to a life governed by the Word of God. By emptying one's greed and ego, one becomes more obedient to the Word of God and lives a life governed by the Word. This kind of life is a place of obedience and devotion centered on the Word of God. When one lives a balanced life governed by the Word, one can achieve unity between faith and deed. Fourth, the spirituality of kenosis enables one to escape from the miserable reality experienced by humans without God. A life without the presence of God falls into four negative situations. It falls into chaos (תהו tohu), emptiness (בהו bohu), darkness (תשך hoshek), and the depth (תהום tehom), becoming a gloomy life of death. The spirituality of kenosis enables one to escape from the fall, sinking, and the fourfold death.
In the future, there is a need to study and explore in depth the spirituality and interpretation of kenosis of Lee Se-jong.
Lee Se-jong We hope that by re-examining the interpretation of kenosis spirituality, the Korean church and all Christians will practice true kenosis spirituality themselves and that the kingdom of God will grow.

본 연구는 이세종의 케노시스(Κένωσις) 영성과 그 현대적 의의를 문헌 연구와 비교·연구 방법을 통해 분석하였다. 이세종의 케노시스 영성은 자기 비움과 봉사의 실천으로 그리스도의 삶과 가르침을 구현하며, 현대 신앙 공동체에 중요한 통찰과 방향성을 제공한다.
본 논문은 이세종의 영성과 기독교 전통 특히 렉시오 디비나와의 연관성을 탐구하며, 그의 묵상과 기도 중심의 신앙생활이 시대를 초월한 영적 유산임을 강조하였다. 나아가, 그의 삶과 사상은 현대교회가 직면한 세속화와 성장 중심의 구조적 문제 속에서 케노시스의 본질을 재발견하고, 이를 통해 그리스도의 빛과 소금 역할을 회복할 수 있음을 시사한다.
이세종의 케노시스 영성의 핵심은 다음과 같다.
하나님의 나라 중심의 영성: 신행일치(信行一致)를 회복하고, 하나님의 말씀으로 통치받는 공동체로의 성장을 추구한다. 약자와 소외된 자에 대한 섬김: 권위적 리더십을 내려놓고 섬김의 리더십을 실천하며, 관계 중심의 배려와 나눔을 강조한다. 기도와 묵상 중심의 영성 훈련: 성도들이 침묵기도와 렉시오 디비나를 통해 자기 비움과 하나님의 뜻을 발견하도록 돕는다. 영적 성숙과 내적 깊이: 하나님의 임재를 경험하며 혼돈, 공허, 흑암, 깊음의 상태에서 벗어나 영적 승리를 이루는 훈련을 지속한다.
이세종의 삶은 현대 그리스도인에게 단순한 모범이 아니라 실천적 도전을 제시하며, 하나님의 뜻을 따라 사는 참된 제자의 삶으로 나아가도록 요구한다. 본 연구는 케노시스 영성의 현대적 재조명과 실천 방안을 제안하며, 향후 이세종의 영성과 신학적 재해석에 대한 추가 연구의 필요성을 제기한다.
