The purpose of this thesis is to analyse novels by Kim Myung Soon by the psychology of the self and to widen it's understanding. It is true that previous researches concentrated mostly on her personal life rather than her literary accomplishments. Thereafter, through her position within the realm of literature had been restored, usually her profile is dismissed or mentioned in a single line in the historical chronicles of Korean literature. To analyse Kim Myung Soon's works, whom also lived a dramatic life is a necessary preceeding work to study the developments of women's consciousness and bring back the status of female Literature to the 1920's
Psychology of the self had been accomplished on the basis of Freud's traditional analysis of consciousness. But the difference between Heinz Kohut works and that of Freud's must be acknowledged. This essay which emphasizes on narcissism shows dramatic differences in it's theoretical reasoning. Despite Freud's view of thinking narcissism as obnoxious form of regressive psychopathology, Heinz Kohut view was that it is a normal psychological process. As narcissism develops, its elements changes. Especially starting from the idealized parental imago and the grandiose self then finally developing into bipolar self which accomplishes one's ideal and ambitions Kohut found out certain desires are related to the primitive form of narcissism these includes the desires of the idealize subject, and the desire to be accepted by the subject the finally be considered by it. Kohut argue that these desire survival and energy.
He then proceeds that allows these psychological functions are also experienced as a port of oneself. because these subjects are experienced as s part of oneself. He names these subjects as selfobject, the desires of selfobject continues throughout one's life. Just like mass never changing, the primary desires of doesn't either . It only changes its form. He also named the experience of the strong embodiment of desires of selfobject the transfomation of selfobject. The greatest difference between Freud and Kohut is that Freud recognised desire as the only origin of elicitation which exists in the system of psychology and did not account the environment that may have affected it. On the other hand what Kohut emphasized was not the environment itself but the experience of the environment and its effects on the development of a childs system of psychology. As the elements of narcissism are completed, the child then can accomplish his(her) cohesive self as whole. Heinz Kohut news neurosis as an attempt to regain and this is an identical element in Kim Myung Soon's works loses the subjects of idealized parents and experiences transformation of the ideal, to endlessly desires their perfect selfobject. They were craving for their the grandiose self. It is not an easy matter due to the failure of gaining idealized parental imago. The grandiose self could be shown as mirror transformed as the desire to learn.
In the 1920's when the patriarchal social order was strong, one can also witness in Kim Myung Soon's work the counter-vectors of standing against the violent reality. Though not the protagonist in the sub-character's dialogues or action we can recognize the change of time which is an another aspect of Kim Myung Soon's works. Through the protagonist who endlessly attempt to find their cohesive self, one can also find the origin of power of female literature.
