This study aims to analyze the errors of 3rd grade students in elementary school, who are first introduced to the multiplication and division algorithm of natural numbers.
First, what types of errors do 3rd graders in elementary school show in multiplication and division of natural numbers?
Second, what are the tendencies of third-grade elementary school students' errors in multiplication and division of natural numbers?
In order to solve the research problem, errors occurred were analyzed by conducting multiplication and division tests of natural numbers targeting 3rd grade students in three elementary schools located in Seoul. The error characteristics of students were analyzed to set the error types, and the occurrence trends were analyzed according to the teaching-learning topics and error types.
The conclusions obtained through this study are as follows.
First, third graders in elementary school commit many errors in multiplication and division of natural numbers, other than the algorithm of the operation itself. Errors with various characteristics such as place value, meaning of zero, and basic arithmetic were found. When teaching multiplication and division of natural numbers, continuous instruction on other factors necessary for multiplication and division besides algorithms is needed.
Second, third graders in elementary school found division more difficult than multiplication of natural numbers. When the test results are compared, division of natural numbers shows a higher error rate and non-response rate. The percentage of students with a correct answer rate of 60-100% was also lower in division of natural numbers. Therefore, a more sophisticated and detailed map of the division of natural numbers is needed.
Third, 3rd grade students in elementary school learn multiplication and division of natural numbers and commit errors with various characteristics depending on the teaching-learning topic. Although it is a similar subject dealing with multiplication and division of natural numbers, various errors occur depending on the detailed characteristics of the teaching-learning subject. Therefore, teachers should establish and guide appropriate guidance methods according to teaching-learning topics.
