This study was conducted on the Mi-so class at Happiness child care center located in the Gyeonggi-do. Subjects of the study were 3 to 5 years-old mixed-age group’s 9 children. For collect researching data, video shot had been recorded during 24 times participant observation from April 8, 2014 to July 03, 2014 and had in-depth interviewed with teachers 3 times.
In addition, researcher had often non-formal interviews conducted with children and teachers when necessary to understand thoughts and reasons for the study subjects and had collected various documents. For data analysis, had reviewed and classified video transcriptions, field notes, in-depth interview data, various document data and had process of categorization and validity.
The results of this research were as follows.
First, summarizing for the social aspects of conflict about children of mixed age groups in Miso class are as follows. Social conflicts that appear most frequently in the peer relationships of children was the ownership dispute.
Ownership disputes are mainly appeared from 3 years old who lacking the ability to form social relationships that conflict blindly rob the toys, upper age infant could claim their ownership and monopoly because their language skills have developed. Also lower age children wanted to play with upper age children who have more excellent play configuration capability, but the conflict state occurred when upper age children do not want to play with lower age children because it is not so interesting. Finally, the upper age children in Miso class are made to conflict with under age children by exercising their authority. whereas in lower age children are made to conflict with upper age children by self-centered behavior with own persistence.
Second, conflict resolution strategies that appear in the peer relationships of mixed age groups children are as follows. In the case of upper age children mainly solve the problem by language skill like explaining the reason of problem or claiming through rationalization and justification because they have development of communication skill. Lower age children usually resolve the conflict such as the avoidance or craziness weep. In addition, the upper age children were easily escape the conflict situations because they have developed social communication skills such as agree with lower age children's opinion, to apologize immediately to escape. but the lower age children avoid or finished a conflict situation by strategies that pretend to do not know conflict situation or to avoid a conflict.
Finally upper age children were done to participate themselves in conflict situation or find a peaceful way to resolve the conflict situation in order to solve this conflict problem. however, lower age children usually snitch to teacher or lean to teacher when they could not freely.
As above we could find out that children's social conflict and resolution strategies are difference in each children's ages through the research results. and need to understanding upper age children what lower age children lack of interpersonal skills and social skills rather than explaining such as upper age children must yield to lower age children. Lower age children need to provide learning opportunities to learn concessions and care for others. and teach to children how using the effective conflict resolution strategies.
