Adolescents, mainly middle and high school students, are a period of marked physical and mental changes. If hardship or adversity is encountered during such adolescence, a reaction will occur, such as frustration or adaptation. In addition to this, some of the soldiers who defend our country are also struggling recently because they cannot adapt to life in the barracks. I started this study with the idea that both youth and soldiers need resilience to stand up from difficulties.
This study started with the hypothesis that military personnel would be more resilient than adolescents. This was because it was assumed that the soldiers of the military base would have higher resilience than the youth because they made the minds and bodies of the warriors sound through group life and uniform training. In this regard, 50 youths and 50 soldiers each were selected as samples.
In this study, the KRQ-53 resilience scale was used, and in data processing and analysis, an independent sample T-test was performed to compare the means between groups. Analysis was performed using the SPSS 22.0 program (SPSS Statistics 22, IBM, Armonk, NY., USA). The assumption of equal variances was tested at p>0.05 level using Levene's test.
As a result, the overall resilience of the youth was 175.84 points and the military soldiers 208.32 points, indicating that the resilience of the soldiers was significantly higher. Compared to the Korean adult average of 195 points, adolescents were lower than this, and military personnel were higher than this. Comparing by domain, adolescents scored 58.74 points and soldiers scored 68.42 points in the self-regulation ability domain. In interpersonal ability, adolescents scored 59.78 points and soldiers scored 72.54 points. Also, in the positivity area, 57.32 points for youth and 67.36 points for soldiers were calculated. In all areas, the soldiers were overwhelming the resilience of the youth. The null hypothesis that soldiers are more resilient than adolescents was significantly accepted.
Here, we should note that the resilience of military personnel is high. In other words, it is the fact that the military is the last fortress that can provide collective education, and it is evaluated that such education is being carried out efficiently. Therefore, the military authorities should systematically conduct more intensive training to improve resilience through character guidance, etc. By doubling the capabilities of the soldiers physically and mentally, it is necessary to cultivate the foundation for not only defending the homeland but also leading an appropriate and efficient social life in the military base.
Along with the military, the resilience of youth in a period of physical and mental upheaval should also be increased. In order to do that, it is necessary to break away from the supremacy of school performance centered on entrance exams and conduct overall personality education so that physical and mental balance can be properly achieved. Appropriate physical activity and establishment of positive lifestyles are absolutely necessary for adolescents.
