『모두 왕의 사람들』에 나타난 역사성과 미국정신 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문의 목적은 『모두 왕의 사람들』에 나타난 미국정신의 이원적 현상과 이와 관련한 시대정신을 개인의식과 관련시켜 고찰해 보는 데 있다. 미국정신은 다수의 역사가들이 인정하듯 건국 당시부터 이원화된 상태로 서로를 견제하며 시대를 지배해왔다. 문제는 이 두 정신의 갈등과 대립을 둘러싼 미국사회 전체의 커다란 흐름이 시대정신으로 반영되어 각 개인의 신념과 적잖은 마찰을 빚어낼 가능성이 있다는 점이다. 개인이 받아들인 사상은 곧 인성을 형성하면서 개인의 삶과 정신을 지배하기 때문이다.
워런의 『모두 왕의 사람들』은 이러한 문제를 심도 있게 다룬 작품이라 할 수 있다. 이 소설의 등장인물들에게는 이원화된 미국정신의 다양한 양상들이 투영된다. 즉, 이들은 건국 초기 이념으로 형상화된 낭만적 이상주의에서부터 근대 이후 계몽주의의 영향을 받은 실용주의 정신에 이르는 복합적인 양상을 띠고 있다. 개인은 의식 혹은 무의식적으로 시대정신의 영향을 받으며 자신의 이상과 현실에 괴리가 생겼을 때 그 간극을 메울 무언가를 찾는다. 이 과정에서 자신의 숨겨진 다른 모습이 드러날 수 있고 스스로에게 타인이 되는 자아분열 상태에 이를 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 이 소설의 인물들이 보이는 이중의식을 역사성과 관련시켜 살펴보고, 사회에서 이들이 겪는 갈등과 대립을 미국정신의 발전단계와 연결하여 첫째, 미국 실용주의 검토, 둘째, 역사 속의 개인이 지닌 인간정신 탐구, 셋째, 과거 수용의 문제 등 워런의 역사의식을 논하였다.
Ⅱ장에서는 이원화된 미국정신이 현대 사회와 작중 인물들에게 미친 영향을 분석하면서 워런의 ‘미국 실용주의의 검토’를 조명한다. 청교도정신의 양면성은 막스 베버(Max Weber)가 지적하듯 미국이 자본주의 국가로 발돋움하는 데 중요한 성장 동력이면서 그 세속화로 인해 비판의 대상이 되기도 했다. 윌리의 실용주의와 아담의 이상주의 간의 대립이 맞게 되는 파국을 통해 워런은 청교도정신의 양면성에서 태동한 실용주의가 초래한 폐단을 비판하고 있다.
Ⅲ장에서는 워런의 ‘인간정신 탐구’와 관련하여 시대정신이 개인의식에 끼쳐 온 영향을 ‘인간의 정신구조를 역사적ㆍ사회적으로 연구한’ 바르부(Zevedei Barbu)와 리즈먼(David Riesman)의 이론을 접목시켜 분석 및 고찰해 보았다. 시대정신은 개인의 정신과 인격형성에 지대한 영향을 미치기 때문에 사회 속의 개인은 습득된 의식을 자신의 특질로 여기며 살아간다. 그러므로 시대정신이 개인의식을 과도하게 지배할 경우 개인의 삶을 파괴시킬 정도로 큰 폐단을 낳게 됨을 살펴보았다.
Ⅳ장에서 다룬 ‘과거 수용의 문제’는 이 소설과 관련하여 가장 중요한 주제다. 워런은 인물 간의 갈등 해소를 위해 잭 버든(Jack Burden)으로 하여금 과거를 돌아보게 하면서 자기인식 과정에 들어서게 한다. 이원화된 미국정신이 극단으로 치달았을 때 파생되는 사회적 불협화음과, 시대정신이 개인의식을 과도하게 지배했을 때 초래할 수 있는 비극성을 지적하며 워런은 그 해결책을 잭 버든을 통해 제시하고 있다. 따라서 워런이 이원화된 미국정신을 통해 보여주고자 했던 것은 화합을 통한 새로운 미국정신의 모색(摸索)이라 할 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This thesis examines the interconnectedness of American thought of the times with individual consciousness of the characters in Robert Penn Warren’s All the King’s Men (1946). As many historians have noted, American consciousness has been divided into two streams since the foundation of the nation. The confrontations between the two ideas, which have been reflected in ‘the spirit of the times,’ resulted in discord among individuals. As Fritz Pappenheim noted, individuals may discover the hitherto hidden aspects of their inner selves or/and become divided in their own selves by becoming a stranger to themselves. The study explores the double consciousness of the characters in relation to history and relates their conflicts and confrontations to the development process of American spirit. Warren’s view of history is discussed in the following terms: the reexamination of American pragmatism, the inquiry into the individual understanding of history, and the individuals’ acceptance of the past.
ChapterⅡ studies how the dual aspects of American consciousness have exerted influence on the characters in the 20th-century novel. As Max Weber earlier noted, Puritanism was often blamed for accelerating American capitalism and, thereby, facilitating secularization of individuals. Warren also criticizes some aspects of American pragmatism, a derivative of Puritanism.
Chapter Ⅲ, using the perspective of the theories of Barbu and Riesman, analyzes how ‘the spirit of the times’ has influenced individual consciousness and the personality formation. According to Warren, American spirit will drive into catastrophe when dualism goes to the extreme. Warren also suggests that, when the spirit of the times governs individual consciousness, it will lead to the downfall of individual life.
Chapter Ⅳ deals with the issue of recognizing the significance of the past. As a narrator, Jack Burden recovers his self-identity after experiencing the vicissitudes of life in his relationship with other people. After the long journey into the past, he is awakened and is reconciled with the past, recognizing the significance of accepting the past. Warren suggests the new American spirit based on reconciliation with the past.
