This study seeks to identify the reasons why AI-generated creative outputs have not been effectively applied to or accepted within the field of craft, focusing not on technological limitations but on the psychological boundaries in the perceptions of individuals with experience in craft. To this end, the concepts of craft and artificial intelligence were first reviewed within a theoretical framework, and the central research question was formulated as follows: Can people regard creative works produced using artificial intelligence as craft? Based on this question, the study established the hypothesis that the limited application of AI in the craft field stems not from technological incompleteness, but from a psychological distance embedded in the criteria by which works are recognized as craft.
The research methodology consisted of three approaches. First, a semantic differential scale (SDS) survey was conducted using only the stimulus words “craft” and “AI” to quantify the emotional images associated with each concept. Second, works designed by craft practitioners and by AI were produced and presented under identical conditions and evaluated through a blind test, thereby excluding preconceived notions regarding technical completeness. Third, after disclosing the creator of each work, in-depth interviews were conducted to explore the contextual reasons behind participants’ evaluations.
The results indicate that, at the linguistic and conceptual level, craft and AI evoke clearly differentiated images. Under blind conditions, however, the visual and functional completeness of craft-designed and AI-designed works was evaluated as comparable. Once the information that a work was “AI-generated” was revealed, trust in its craft value declined, leading to lower preference and purchase intention.
These findings suggest that the limitations of AI application in the craft field arise not from technological immaturity, but from a lack of trust in emotional authenticity and the narrative of making. Accordingly, this study argues that AI should be positioned not as a substitute for craft, but as a complementary tool—for purposes such as idea exploration, rapid visualization, documentation, and management or distribution. Furthermore, in order to preserve and strengthen craft value, transparency in the production process, human-centeredness, and the maintenance of emotional value must be addressed in parallel.
