Earthwoks are that they appears in the same times with Minimal Art, Conceptual Art, Happening, and Performance of art mode spreaded suddenly in the basis on Avan-garde idea in the 1960's after World War Ⅱ .
Earthworks are willing to accept the reappraisal of original materials or non-material elements, introduces earth landscape and the infinite space of environment into the expressing area of iぉ, provides direct experience for visual scale shock with spectators.
Earthworks changed our sight into nature in modem society to being mechanization, emphasized the harmony between people and nature. Therefore, they are made up the natural materials like soil, stone, and tree.
Also they are willing to approach the archaeological method in culture of the prehistoric age, endow the new conception with historic remains or remaining structures.
Earthworks were interested in the natural conception of "Art" with a new sight for landscape, introduction of Mother Nature for art, and action or emphasis of operating process. And Earthworks add to various character - place, time, non-material, great size and so on - to existing art, with relating various pictures trend to it
They play an important role on the conceptual extension art in a new knowledgement for art ideas established after modernism. And it is a stream of art expansion after 1970's.
However, Earthworks has various difficult problems of economic aspects, the operating process with great size, and the method of communication to spectators.
But, these problems treat with the characteristic of Earthworks as character of them. Therefore, Earthworks can be looked upon as expansional art conception in the art mode been developed after 1960's, also people reinterpret the nature out of view of nature as to the evolution of civilization, provide our with a method reserching life of people as to direct experience.
