색조는 NCS nuance 의 1area(Toned light grey), 6area(Toned dark grey)와 유채색도가 높은 영역인 3area(Brilliant), 4area(Deep chromatic)에서 높은 빈도를 나타내었고, 중간 유채색도에서는 낮은 분포를 보였다.

Basic culture in which original folk culture is inherited is becoming important as a field to represent the identity of folk culture and to study racial spirit. This research has for its object to look carefully into the peculiarity of the color of the costume in the Korean culture by revealing the characteristic and the idea of the color being discovered in the Korean basic culture, which has the majority of the Korean people.
In this investigation based on the study of the documentary record related to the Korean basic culture the scope of the basic culture was divided into folk belief, folk game and folk play. Within these limits 32 items specified as import intangible cultural properties were selected and the meanings of the colors shown in those objects were studied as well as the characteristics were analyzed. For the color of the costume shown in the Korean basic culture 190 photographs of the important intangible properties were selected and the colors of the dress, accessories, instruments were extracted by comparing with the naked eye in NCS Color System.
For the analysis of hue and tone the secondary dimensional analysis using NCS color system and the three-dimensional analysis using the software, COLOR 3D Version 2.0, were done. The color representing the costume of the Korean basic culture was drawn considering the frequency commonly shown in the entire appearance frequency and in every sphere within the extent of the study. Besides that, the principle of the color arrangement used in the dress of the Korean basic culture was discovered and based on the preceding study the characteristics in Korean basic culture were examined by comparing and analyzing that in the colors of advanced culture.
The colors of the costume extracted from the important intangible properties were 1,174 in total and 296 when the overlapped ones were excluded. For the characteristic of the costume color in the Korean basic culture achromatic color was found to have the highest frequency and yellow, red and blue followed, especially, yellow and yellowish red and purplish blue. For the color tone area 1 (toned light gray) and area 6 (toned dark gray) of NCS nuance and area 3 (brilliant) and area 4(deep chromatic) of high chromaticness appeared very frequently whereas the middle chromaticness showed low frequency.
As a result of selecting the colors commonly shown in three categories, 27 colors that based on Five-elements color of yellowish red, yellow and purplish blue were extracted as the representative colors in the Korean basic culture. The color arrangement used in the dress of the Korean basic culture adopted the visual effect of the primary color that based on Five-elements color and white and red were proven very important in the color arrangement. Also, as the number of the color arrangement increased, the colors darker than dominant color of on Five-elements color, which formed the color arrangement, were arranged and played their role as effective recessive color of on Five-elements color.
In order to examine the characteristic of the costume color in the Korean basic culture it was compared with the color of the upper class based on the result of the preceding study. Finally, the color of the basic culture was found to be a little high in brightness whereas a little low in saturation. Also, it was shown to use more limited color than the upper class.
Traditionally, in daily life the Korean people dressed in achromatic color due to custom, habit and outer economic and politic limitation. On the other hand, in unusual and chaotic occasion they used gorgeous color instead. In fact, it is used in any place where undifferentiated identity appears vividly since for a long history it has been considered as the symbol color of chaos, which is the origin of undifferentiated identity. The color, which has strong visual effect, is linked together with the world of unlimited and infinite freedom and the original image of human being is shaped as well.
There were differences in the characteristics of colors according to the thickness of undifferentiated identity in three categories: folk belief, game and play, which developed from religion to art. The difference in color according to the degree of accepting folk belief was shown especially in the color tone; the frequency of the color tone that belongs to 3 area (brilliant) and 4 area (deep chromatic) was 44.4% for folk belief, 43.9% for folk game and 38.9% for folk play. This implies that people dressed in color with high saturation in religious circumstances rather than in artistic ones. Therefore, it is understood that the Korean Arche-pattern can be discovered in the color of the Korean basic culture.
The result of this investigation is as the following:
It has been reported that Five-elements color is commonly used in many areas since the Korean color culture has been dominantly effected by the ideological color value suggested by the cosmic dual forces and the Five Elements. Even in this research the colors of the costume in the Korean basic culture, white, gray and black of achromatic color and yellowish red, yellow and purplish blue were shown as the main colors. This confirms that the colors that based on Five-elements color are becoming the basis. Although there was no significant difference in the characteristic of the hue in folk belief, game and play, which were the limits of this study, in the respect of the tone, it was found that folk belief then folk game and folk play in order, which developed from religion to art, used the highest saturation. In other words, it is understood that there was difference in color according to the degree of accepting folk belief and that Arche-pattern, which is a characteristic commonly found in the Korean traditional society, was shown as a characteristic of color. Traditionally, the Korean citizens wore in achromatic color in daily life whereas dressed in chromatic color in chaotic time or space in which idea and symbol were inherited separating from their daily life. This means that they tried to overcome limited reality by brining the symbol, which chromatic color stands for in undifferentiated chaos, into reality and such effort was shaped as bisected costume culture. The primary colors we see in religious service, game and play that we perform, as a part of contemporary folk festival should be understood as the succeeded tradition in which people used chromatic color with chaotic meaning in order to overcome their desperate reality. Likewise, the color of the costume in the Korean basic culture was a symbol of the divine world that is distinguished from the mundane world and was used as an instrumental meaning needed in entering the world of chaos, in earning the existence needed in reality and in returning to the world of cosmos.
This research is significant for it prepared the basis that can be of help in understanding the color culture of the contemporary Korean people by examining the origin of the color individually selected by the Korean base citizens in their religious and ideological life through the color of the costume in the Korean basic culture.
