Behind the immigaration of early Puritans to America, there were Bible-based thought, Millennialism, and the Convenant Theology. In time, the thoughts that reverd the Bible as highest authority for principles and customs of life came to be well established due to the effects of the Reformation of the continent. The lukewarm church reform of England led to its fall and Millennialism, which looked up to the construction of True Church to sustain the millennial kingdom, while the failure of reformation led to the thoughts pursuing personal convenant relationship with God through inner holiness.
Meanwhile, the Pilgrim Fathers, who immigrated in America in 1620, pursued religious conscience separating religion and politics. Afterward, John Winthrop and other many Puritans who immigrated in 1630 pursued the ideal community of theocracy based on the Bible.
Congregationalism was raised against the church reform of England as a new church form. The utopia of the early Puritans is well revealed in the Dedham settlement. No later than just one generation, however, the utopia pursued by the Puritans came to be demolished by the conveniences of material civilization.
