Novels and films are two art forms rooted in life. While they share commonalities, there are also many differences between them. With the advancement of internet technology and other innovations, people increasingly seek information that combines both visual and auditory effects. Literary creation has begun to draw from film techniques, placing greater emphasis on visual and auditory storytelling, scene dynamics, and a cinematic sense. Novels provide a wealth of story resources for films, contributing to many outstanding cinematic works. In today’s trend of transmedia storytelling, Yan Geling’s works, with their unique value and profound portrayal of female characters, have become a focus of academic research.
This study focuses on the transformation of female images and the representation of cultural connotations in the film adaptations of Yan Geling’s novels within a transmedia storytelling context. As a prominent author in contemporary Chinese literature, Yan Geling’s works present a unique female perspective through meticulous character portrayals and rich historical settings. Through transmedia storytelling, her works have been adapted into films, enriching the portrayal of female characters and allowing for reinterpretation within new cultural contexts. This thesis systematically analyzes the presentation, positioning, and cultural symbolism of female images in Yan Geling’s representative novels and their film adaptations, using perspectives from narratology, film aesthetics, and cultural semiotics.
Starting from the theoretical foundations, this research outlines the framework of transmedia storytelling and female character representation, clarifying the narrative transformations involved in adapting literature to film and the innovative impact of transmedia storytelling on the portrayal of female characters. Based on this framework, the thesis examines the multilayered qualities of female characters in Yan’s novels and explores how, in their film adaptations, these characters are extended and enriched through narrative restructuring, pacing control, visual storytelling, and symbolic imagery. Additionally, this study investigates the role of social and historical backgrounds in shaping character traits and how transmedia storytelling reconstructs these contexts during adaptation, thereby endowing female images with new cultural connotations in the film adaptations.
In the film aesthetics section, the thesis explores the role of cinematic elements such as camera language, sound and music, and scene design in enhancing the expressiveness of female characters. It analyzes how these elements deepen the emotional resonance and symbolic meaning of female characters, enabling them to convey cultural significance through visual symbols and spatial imagery. These design choices allow female characters to possess a stronger emotional appeal, enhancing audience engagement and cultural impact.
Finally, this study examines the cultural symbolism of female characters in Yan Geling’s film adaptations, investigating how these adaptations contribute to the social recognition and acceptance of female images, as well as cross-cultural interpretations and reception within different cultural contexts. The findings suggest that transmedia storytelling not only innovatively diversifies the representation of female characters but also enables Yan’s female figures to be reinterpreted and accepted within a global cultural context.
By analyzing Yan Geling’s transmedia adaptations, this research further expands the application of transmedia storytelling theory in the study of female character representation, offering new perspectives and theoretical support for the depiction of female images and cultural implications in film adaptations. It demonstrates how film adaptations, through media transformation, strengthen the cultural value and social significance of female characters.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

소설과 영화는 생활에서 유래한 두 가지 예술 형식이고 비슷한 점도 있고 현저한 차이도 있다. 인터넷 기술과 과학기술이 발전함에 따라 사람들은 시각과 청각의 이중 효과를 가진 정보를 접하는 경향이 강해졌다. 문학 창작도 영화와 텔레비전의 표현 기법을 참고하여 영화에 풍부한 이야기 자원을 기여하고 많은 걸출한 스크린 가작을 만들었다. 오늘날 트랜스미디어 스토리텔링이 성행하는 시대의 흐름 하에서 엄가령(嚴歌苓)의 작품은 그 독특한 가치와 여성 이미지에 대한 깊은 묘사로 학술 연구의 초점이 되었다.
엄가령의 소설은 다양한 사회계층의 여성에 초점을 맞추고 기생, 이민 소녀, 정치피해자 등 여러 가지 이미지를 묘사하였다. 그는 자세한 묘사를 통해 이런 여성들의 곤경에서의 강인함과 성장을 보여주었으며 여성의 운명에 대한 관심을 충분히 구현하였다. 엄가령의 작품은 서사적으로 매력이 있을 뿐만 아니라 선명한 화면감과 카메라 감도 갖추고 있다. 작가는 능숙한 문학 기교와 영화 언어에 대한 감지를 통해 소설을 영상화 효과를 갖추게 하였다. 트랜스미디어 스토리텔링에서 영화 각색은 원작의 줄거리를 충실하게 나타낼 뿐만 아니라 인물 관계를 재구성하고 서사 구조를 조정함으로써 여성 이미지를 풍부하게 하였다. 감독은 시각적 기호를 통해 이러한 캐릭터에 상징적 의미를 부여하고 주제를 심화시키며 관중들의 상상 공간을 넓혔다.
트랜스미디어 스토리텔링의 시각에서 볼 때 소설은 문자를 통해 여성의 내면을 깊이 있게 묘사하고 영화는 영상과 음향 효과를 통해 그의 외적 이미지와 행위를 직관적으로 보여주며 더욱 깊은 사회와 문화적 의미를 부여하였다. 본 연구는 여성 캐릭터가 어떻게 서로 다른 역사와 문화 배경에서 자신의 정체성과 가치를 찾는지를 제시하는 동시에 영화에서 여성 이미지 서사의 특징과 문화적 의미를 분석하고 트랜스미디어 스토리텔링에서 여성 이미지의 변화 발전과 문화적 가치를 잘 이해하였다. 이 연구를 통해 엄가령의 문학 창작을 이해하는데 새로운 시각을 제공할 뿐만 아니라 현대 사회에서 중국 여성 이미지의 변화를 분석하는데 중요한 근거를 제공하였다.
