With climate change mitigation and carbon emission reduction emerging as global imperatives, the expansion of renewable energy has become a core strategy worldwide. The purpose of this study is to identify the developmental trends of major renewable energy technologies—namely solar, wind, geothermal, and hydropower—and to compare and evaluate their technological competitiveness among leading nations. To this end, a total of 194,485 granted patents filed between 1975 and 2024 were collected based on the International Patent Classification (IPC) system, and patent as well as technology portfolio analyses were conducted. The indicators employed include the number of patents granted, claim count ratio, citation ratio, and patent family ratio. The study targets the five major energy powers: the United States, the European Union, Japan, China, and Korea.
Trend analysis revealed a sharp increase in energy-related patents after 2010, with solar technologies accounting for more than 60% of the total. Patent portfolio results identified the United States as the technological leader, maintaining both high quantitative activity and qualitative excellence; China demonstrated remarkable quantitative expansion, while Europe exhibited strong qualitative performance. Furthermore, technology portfolio analysis showed that while core technologies are shared globally, the domains of applied technologies differ across countries, reflecting variations in industrial bases, policy orientations, and levels of technological maturity.
Building on these findings, this study delineates priority technology domains, proposes optimal pathways for international R&D collaboration, and recommends policy levers to accelerate technology commercialization. These insights enable policymakers and industry stakeholders to strategically allocate resources and construct balanced technology portfolios aligned with global initiatives such as carbon neutrality and the RE100 commitment.
