This study begins by addressing the theoretical limitations and challenges that
emerge when Western art historical theories are applied to non-Western artistic
traditions. Focusing specifically on Chinese painting and calligraphy, it
reexamines the possibilities and conditions for cross-cultural formal analysis.
Traditionally, Heinrich Wölfflin’s formalist theory—comprising five binary
categories (linear vs. painterly, planar vs. recessional, closed vs. open, clarity vs.
ambiguity, multiplicity vs. unity)—has served as a foundational interpretive
framework in Western art history and has frequently been extended to
non-Western visual arts as a presumed universal methodology. However,
Chinese painting and calligraphy embody unique visual and aesthetic principles,
such as brushstroke-driven expression, the structural function of negative space,
multi-perspectival composition, and the rendering of inner energy and rhythm,
which often resist interpretation through the lens of conventional Western
formalism.
In response, this study critically engages with the applicability and adaptability
of Wölfflin’s theory to Chinese visual arts. Rather than simply applying existing
categories, it reinterprets each formal pair as a “cultural prototype” and
investigates how these conceptual oppositions are either accepted, transformed,
or resisted within Chinese aesthetic frameworks. To enable a systematic
analysis, the study proposes a three-stage research model: (1) extracting formal
elements, (2) applying corresponding categories, and (3) deriving conceptual
extensions. Through this model, it is demonstrated that formal structures are
not merely visual arrangements but are deeply embedded in the cognitive,
perceptual, and aesthetic premises of each culture.
Using representative Chinese artworks—Fan Kuan’s Travelers Among
Mountains and Streams, Shi Tao’s Ten Thousand Ugly Peaks, Many Boats, Cui
Bai’s Double Happiness, and Xu Wei’s spontaneous calligraphy—as core case
studies, this research conducts detailed formal analysis following the proposed
three-step framework. In the category of linear vs. painterly, it is shown that
Chinese linework serves not only to delineate contours but also to convey
spiritual rhythm and internal energy. Brushstrokes and ink tonalities form a
complex visual system that integrates both linear and painterly qualities. In the
planar vs. recessional category, Chinese paintings utilize dispersed perspective
and the structural role of negative space (liubai) to evoke imagined depth and
temporal movement, inviting the viewer to 'wander and dwell' within the image.
Scroll formats such as handscrolls and album leaves also reveal that visual
composition in Chinese art is inherently open-ended and temporally extended,
contrasting with the static and enclosed nature of Western framed paintings.
Furthermore, clarity and ambiguity, multiplicity and unity, are shown to operate
not in conflict but as complementary principles, enabling dynamic interplay
between spontaneity and structure.
These findings demonstrate that while Wölfflin’s framework offers useful
analytical tools, its application to Chinese painting and calligraphy requires
flexible adaptation and cultural reinterpretation. The study emphasizes that
effective cross-cultural formal analysis must not be limited to surface-level
comparisons but should instead address the deep-seated cognitive and aesthetic
mechanisms that shape visual forms. In doing so, this research offers a viable
analytical framework for comparative aesthetics, proposing methodological criteria
for adapting Western theories to non-Western contexts.
Ultimately, this study verifies the potential of Wölfflinian analysis as a bridge
between cultural systems of visuality and proposes a renewed aesthetic
paradigm that balances universality and particularity. By reframing formal
analysis as a dynamic tool for intercultural understanding, the research
contributes to expanding the methodological and theoretical horizon of global art
history and comparative visual culture studies.
