How to look at the world is not just the matter of philosophy. An artist also makes an artistic work with a newly recognized view of the world. Therefore, artistic activities can be the activities of new epistemology about the previous view of the world. The author assumes that this is originated from a new “setting”. This study asked the internal problems of the art world again with a critical attitude using a new methodology of work called ‘Intentional Setting’and analyzed the research work the author made in comparison with the context of the art history, responding to conventions of the art world that the author experienced while making his artwork.
This ‘Intentional Setting’is a linguistic definition by the author as ‘Art is to accept the outside world and reset intentionally’ through self-examination. ‘Intentional’ emphasizes autonomy from the conventional system, while ‘setting’ is a subclass of concept and is not refined and fixed permanently but strongly referent and temporary and implies variability. This is beyond the traditional strategy of appropriation of simply manipulating reference or citation, which can be explained with sampling among ‘Nicolas Bourriaud’s post-production concepts, and the subsequent practice of various actions corresponds to bricolage.
Regarding the historical background of the work, the continuation of a similar methodology and a display strategy of the contemporary art due to the absence of a new alternative is witnessed, which has been seen as the limitations of the contemporary art, and the global policy that drove multiculturalism is considered that it lost its validity by circling around the national interest and priority caused by the economic recession following the global financial crisis in 2008. The rise of the new abstract art Zombie Formalism in North America confirmed as a strategy of the art market to break the recession and the phenomenon to explore a form again recalled starting with Korea’s Dansaekhwa in the early 2010s are diagnosed as ‘the temporary regression of the art world.’
The Aleatoric painting project: 2013 ~ among the works proceeded as the new methodology ‘Intentional Setting’ is a painting work which interprets the manual reset after studying the art history by the author and six progressions of case that came out discretionally by throwing a dice for temporary-mimetism of different artists and schools. With this, the project can respond to the tradition of the art world which solidifies the artist into the‘physical identity’ and hit the frame of recognition which defines the previous painting through a new interpretation of multiple tasks done. This methodology is similar to David Joselit’s Virus Aesthetics as it has the attitude to be parasitic to the previous system and attempts to change the nature. The limitations, i.e. the strict color application and biased schools of this system, however, lessened the interest in the production of the works and their appreciations.
Thus, this has driven the expandability of painting and the tasks of the author have paid attention to and sympathized with a redefined form or a new abstract trend since the beginning of 2016. Accordingly, this study considers the art history and prepares the 2D & 3D tables, and, based on the tables, purposely violates, crosses, and integrates medium specificity to experiment the comprehensive mash-up painting. Therefore, the production of a work focuses more on a formal side than a realistic problem such as the society, history, or culture and the analysis also follows the same. Although a formal methodology is applied, the strict medium specificity of Clement Greenberg is sublated and the characteristics of 2D & 3D are integrated widely accepting the interrelationship between visitors and the work. Because this study puts emphasis on the expandability of painting, it recalls and reviews the problems of painting that lie scattered around the art history and looks for a new possibility of modern painting by asking an individual question again. Hence, it expands and uses more than what W. J. T. Mitchell did in employing the methodology of meta-painting, beyond the basic function and structure of painting to the interrelationship among the medium, space, situation, and visitors.
As the responsibilities of interpretation by the visitors for the multiple tasks done in various and complicated ways are added, the alternatives are sought through the perspectives of Jacques Derrida and Jacques Rancière. The author seeks the 3rd autonomy of art through a new methodology and attitude. It is to be freed from the responsibilities to reflect the history of modernism and the present issue of contemporary art, that is to get out of medium specificity and discursive autonomy. Additionally, the author deploys the point that the visitors also should be freed from the most difficult responsibilities of reading. Therefore, this study considers and analyzes how various tasks of the author for the expandability of painting will contribute to modern art.
