    【ABSTRACT】

A Study of Time Expression in Hyosa(爻辭)
    of the I Ching
    - Focused on the Sun and the Moon

The expression of time for the sun and the moon, recorded in the ancient philosophical book and divination text, the I Ching (易經), is unrelated to the present time that we experience. However, studying the accumulated past time observed through the sun and moon can help us understand the changes in human beings and nature throughout history and predict the future.
To grasp the concept of time in hyosa (爻辭) of the I Ching, this paper first examines the images of the sun and the moon appearing in the classic works of the East and the West. In both the East and the West, the images of the sun and moon signify the sacredness of heaven and symbolize absolute authority or power on Earth.
Next, the paper explores the representation of the sun and moon in the calendar. Time represents the amount of brightness and darkness of the day and night shared by the sun and the moon, and becomes the fundamental unit of life. The changes and cycles of the sun and moon, representing the seasons and years, are established as the laws of time, characterized by repetition and variation.
Third, the paper delves into the expression of time through the sun and moon, focusing on hyosa of the I Ching. In hyosa of the I Ching, there are seven vocabulary words related to the sun and daytime including Jongil (終日), Iljung (日中), Juil (晝日), Ilcheuk (日昃), Samil (三日), chilil (七日), and Soon (旬). Additionally, the vocabularies related to the moon and nighttime are Seok (夕), Myeong (冥), Weolkimang (月幾望), and Palweol (八月).
Modern science is not only discovering the components and origins of the sun and moon but also delving into the secrets of space and time beyond the galaxy and the distant universe. These studies are interconnected with observing humans, who are an integral part of nature, and predicting the future based on such observations. That is why we have continued to observe and explore the universe, including the sun and moon, from ancient times to the medieval era and up to the present. It is the reason we are researching the meaning of time in various directions, even today when scientific development is remarkable. For that reason, as long as the sun and moon exist, the I Ching will persist and continue to adapt to changes in the future.
