This study aims to examine whether Taekwondo demonstrations can be understood as a form of performing art from the perspective of aesthetic conditions and to analyze the limitations and identity that emerge in that process. Although Taekwondo demonstrations have long developed around the transmission of techniques and educational functions, they have recently shown new performative aspects through the incorporation of such elements as music, lighting, stage direction, and storytelling. Nevertheless, academic discussion on whether Taekwondo demonstrations can be regarded as performing art remains insufficient, and studies that analyze them on the basis of aesthetic criteria in particular are still limited. Accordingly, this study employed a qualitative research approach involving a literature review, an analysis of major Taekwondo demonstration team cases, and semi-structured in-depth interviews with a total of ten participants, including demonstration team leaders, performers, and performance planners. The collected data were analyzed through content analysis using the procedures of open coding, axial coding, and selective coding. The findings showed that Taekwondo demonstrations partially exhibit characteristics of performing art in terms of liveness, interaction with the audience, the inducement of aesthetic experience, and the delivery of symbolic messages. In addition, Taekwondo demonstrations were found to have developed through three stages: the military and educational demonstration stage of the 1950s and 1960s, the institutionalization and international expansion stage of the 1970s to 1990s, and the stage since the 2000s in which performative elements have been more fully incorporated. However, the analysis also revealed that an institution-centered operating structure, limited creative autonomy, a lack of professional production personnel, and the predominance of free performances continue to function as major constraints on the establishment of Taekwondo demonstration as an independent genre of performing art. In conclusion, rather than being a fully established and independent artistic genre that completely satisfies the aesthetic conditions of performing art, Taekwondo demonstration is more appropriately understood as a cultural practice situated at the boundary between martial arts demonstration and performing arts. This study is significant in that it analyzes Taekwondo demonstration from the aesthetic perspective of performing art, suggests the possibility of discussions linking martial arts studies and performing arts studies, and provides a theoretical foundation for examining the cultural and artistic identity of Taekwondo demonstration.
