This study aimed at a critical reexamination of the Reggio Emilia Approach from a philosophical perspective, by analyzing the applicability of the crucial hermeneutic concepts such as "circulation" and "emergence" in actual practices of the approach.
In Korea, the Reggio Emilia Approach (hereafter, the Reggio Approach), first introduced in 1989, has attracted attention in the light of developmental psychology, where the status of children was limited to passive learners in the process of education. This study argues that the Reggio Approach is a project which develops a person's intellectual, cognitive, social, and moral latency through an integrated education, where children as learners not only actively participate but lead the process by engaging in a process of "becoming themselves." Conceptually, the elements of circulation 'and emergence, embedded ,in the practices of the Reggio Approach, constitute a thematic thread that runs throughout this dissertation.
For the purpose of this study, among the related projects conducted in the last eight and a half years by this researcher as a practitioner of the Reggio Approach, one project which best represents the application of the principle of circulation and emergence was selected and analyzed in depth. A hermeneutic phenomenological analysis on the dialogues of the children involved in the meaning-making process, focusing on circulation and emergence, reveals crucial philosophical implications of the Reggio Approach.
Based on the findings of this disseration, it may be of note to redefine some of the major features of the Reggio Approach. The conclusion and the major contribution of this study can be summarized as follows.
First of all, a reconceptualization of children is crucial. The Reggio Approach is an education constructed by children, who are assumed to have the capacity, latency, and right to be and become an existential being. It is an education heavily based on participation and encountering. The possibility of unexpected encountering is important in that a meaningful encountering as a unique situation emerges by children themselves. It is also an education of respect practiced by a prudent listening to others, especially a careful listening to the children's voices. After all, it is an "emergent" education performed through a project method. The Reggio Approach should not be envisioned as a prescribed teaching method but as an open-ended approach, defined and constructed by children themselves as "existential beings."
Second. the Reggio Approach is an art work-oriented education which involves the circulation of various symbols. In this approach, children symbolize and widen their understanding through the cycle of multiple symbolization, which emerges out by the children themselves. This circulation of symbols is reflected in descriptive documentary records. This phenomenological documentation connects life and education, by visualizing the processes of learning, listening, and reflection.
Third, as a teaching process, this approach is based on the reciprocity among teachers, parents and children. Children, teachers, and parents all voluntarily constitute educational functions in this system of education. Community support constitutes an integrated component of this approach.
Finally, this study attempted to illustrate that "circulation" and "emergence" are the two most important substances in the Reggio Approach. The substance of progettazione is a part of hermeneutic circulation. The practice of Reggio Approach is based on the circulation of various elements such as theory and practice, perception, production, reflection, media, communication, etc., leading to the "possibility of the most intrinsic learning".
With regard to emergence, which means a human being to become or reveal him/herself, children are to be respected as existential beings who choose and make decisions of their own. Children are marvelous beings and, at the same time, mysterious. Children appear to be, as reflected in the Reggio Approach, as being kind-hearted, eager to share with others, capable of making relationship, and headed for wholeness.
In the analysis of children's dialogue, where children "emerged" their own voices as a reflection of their concerns in the daily life, it is evident that the Reggio approach is not possible without engaging in a dialogue. The children's portfolios also suggest that art education which clearly emerges a child's existence through visualizing the constructed symbols may naturally serve as the center of this' education.
The Reggio Approach, initially originated in Italy since the mid-1940s, has been considered an "alternative approach" to the existing forms of education. The suggestions of this research may add to the longstanding contributions of the Reggio Approach as follows.
First, this approach challenges our linear understanding of the relationship between theory and practice, In this approach education departs not from theory but from "children" or practice.
Second, on the part of the students, education is a process of becoming oneself or a unique being. Educational programs should be designed to let the students "emerge" their own existence in the midst of the learning process.
Third, circulation should be considered a crucial mode of being, and education should be connected to life in order to facilitate students' circulation of understanding.
Fourth, to achieve an education actively being supported by the community, an institutional network should be established by committed and devoted educators who share the goals of this approach.
