국문 초록 (Abstract)

『Yumongchunja(유몽천자)』written by a missionary, James Scarth Gale, takes the initiative among modern Chinese classic textbooks which were publicized in the late of Chosun Dynasty. This is a four-volume book and each volume is made up of a preface, a table of contents, a body, and a lexicon. The body of each book consists of a title, an explanation of vocabulary and a passage. These common elements have a difference in the styles, contents and vocabularies of each book. The style of a preface is changing from the Korean alphabet to the chinese characters and the passage in changing from the Korean and Chinese characters in combination to the chinese characters extending from the first volume to the last one. This text book is a kind of lexicon listed about a thousand Chinese characters without any duplicated one. This includes various contents such as common sense, the western culture and the excellent compositions of Korea.
『Yumongchunja(유몽천자)』, which was made up of a four-volume book considering the degree of difficulty in learning, is trying a new change from a passage using Korean and Chinese characters in combination to a passage only written by Chinese characters. It also tries a new compiling way including a passage using Korean and Chinese characters in combination, a notation of a foreign language and a lexicon. And it includes the information about globalization and science that was not included at any classic textbook : common sense, information of western history and culture, and knowledge about natural science. By means of these materials, this text book aims at an education of nation and enlightenment.
