The modern society is a multi-cultural society with many different peoples therefore, the adolescents from ordinary family more often meet the ones from multi-cultural families. At this moment, for them to improve the capability to understand and embrace those from various classes and groups based on the idea on the discrimination against the minorities and the underprivileged, confusing identity crisis and unfair experience etc. can be the important factor to move forward to the fair society to solve the matter of bi-polarization. To that end, it is the time to need to find out the invisible distortion in their recognition, to make efforts in getting out of the false idea. We need to know the recognition of discrimination such as what they think the discrimination is, why it occurs and how they think about it, and then we can find the solution to improve the discrimination the adolescents experience. Thus, for this study, we studied what the adolescents from multi-cultural families and those from ordinary families think about the discrimination, and get to study their recognition of discrimination including how they consider it. Besides, we also studied what affects the discrimination they think about and then tried to find out how to improve the discrimination between those from multi-cultural families and those from ordinary ones. The purpose of the study is to find out how the acceptance of cultural diversity affects the recognition of discrimination. Besides, we studied whether the social support controls the relation between acceptance of cultural diversity and recognition of discrimination or not. In details, we studied how the lower definition of multiple culture acceptance for adolescents from ordinary families including the adolescents from multi-cultural families such as diversity, relationship and universality affects the recognition of discrimination. And, we also aimed to find out how family support, friend support, and teacher support out of social support believed to improve the positive adoption among individuals and groups control the relation between multiple culture acceptance and recognition of discrimination. As analyzing how the relation between multiple culture acceptance and recognition of discrimination is and how
the social support controls it, we tried to suggest the detailed direction to improve the social adoption of adolescents to live in multiple culture and the recognition of discrimination important to adapting to society
and school for them.
We sampled 148 adolescents from ordinary families and 30 ones from multi-cultural families randomly from middle and high schools, weekly church school and multi-cultural family support center among those from 14 to 19 who live in Seoul and the Kyeonggi province and surveyed
them.
The result of the study from this research is as follows. First, the result shows the fact that the relationship and universality of multiple culture acceptance affects the recognition of discrimination. It also shows that if the relationship and universality increase which is the necessary ability to live as part of multi-cultural society, the recognition of discrimination gets higher as well. The relationship of multiple culture acceptance is the willingness not to reject or avoid in relating with other groups, not to treat in an unfair way and to actively make relations for mutual exchange and implement them. Universality is the tendency to recognize the fact that we are members of the common world and implement it while not to classify or discriminate the other groups. As the ability to accept the multiple culture is increasing, the correct idea for discrimination gets on the rise, the seriousness of discrimination for the ethical attitude is considered highly and the recognition of discrimination, the sensitivity to find if a certain act to the other group is discriminatory, increases as well. Second, it also shows the result that the parental support, one of the social supports, brings the negative control effect to the relation between the relationship of multiple culture acceptance and the recognition of
discrimination. The parental support even decreases the recognition of discrimination by suppressing the effect of relationship of multiple culture acceptance. It shows that when the negative effect of parental support brings the relationship of multiple culture acceptance in an improper way, the negative effect can occur. Third, it also showed that the experience of travelling to the other countries affected the standard of relationship for the multiple culture acceptance negatively. It tells us that the relationship standard of the study subject without the experience to travel abroad is higher than that of those with the experience to travel abroad. It can be explained in this way that due to the quantitative touch rather than qualitative touch such as understanding the other cultures and recognizing the equal relation with the other groups through the experience of the other cultures with travelling abroad, bias or discrimination gets strengthened. Lastly, the discrimination recognition of adolescents from multi-cultural families is said to be lower than that of adolescents from ordinary families. The reason is that 80% of adolescents who don't go to school with lower discrimination recognition are from multi-cultural families compared to adolescents who go to school out of the subjects of this study. Thus, we can get to know that the discrimination recognition of this study is different not cause of whether they are from multi-cultural families or not but cause of whether they go to school or not.
Based on this study, we can give the following suggestions. First, we need to increase the frequency of education related to multiple culture said to affect the acceptance of multiple culture to improve the standard of relationship and universality of multiple culture acceptance and give people more chances to meet foreigners. To that end, we need to increase the related education by selecting it as the official subject for middle and highs school students like the related subjects to be taught in universities which are usually provided by the existing multi-cultural family support center etc. We also need to increase the chance with which adolescents from both backgrounds meet each other through the related education or programs provided by the existing multi-cultural family support center. Next, we need to provide the correct multiple culture education to parents to change the parental support to show the negative control effect of relationship and discrimination recognition of multiple culture acceptance into the positive effect. We need to expand the related education or programs to parents from ordinary families considering that they are provided only to the
children and their parents from multi-cultural families.
