The purpose of this research is to investigate how the narrative therapy group counseling effects the dysfunctional belief and aggression of children. To achieve this purpose, the following research questions are established;
<Question 1> Does the narrative therapy group counseling reduce the dysfunctional belief of children?
<Question 2> Does the narrative therapy group counseling reduce the aggression of children?
To verify the above questions, seven 5th grade classes in S elementary school in Seoul were measured based on the criteria of dysfunctional belief and aggression. Then, 20 children with high records were sampled, 10 of the children who applied for counseling were placed in experimental group, while the other 10 children who had same quality with the experimental group were placed in a control group. The experimental group participated in 10 sessions of the narrative therapy group counseling over ten weeks, while the control group didn't. After the experiment, a post-test was given to verify the effects of the counseling.
In verifying the effects of the narrative therapy group counseling, quantitative analysis using Korean I-STATistics(Kim, 2009), opinion documents from each session, opinion documents of children after the counseling, and a qualitative study by teachers through observation were used.
The results of quantitative analysis verifying the effects of the counseling were as follows;
First, compared to the control group, the experimental group treated by the narrative therapy group counseling turned out to make significant reduction in dysfuctional belief and its sub-factors(negative social self-concept, excessive demand for others approval, and negative belief of others and social relations).
Second, compared to the control group, the experimental group treated by the narrative therapy group counseling turned out to make significant reduction in aggression and its sub-factors(anger, hostility, aggressive behavior).
In comparison, results from qualitative analysis indicate children have begun overcoming their negative emotions, and experienced growth in the areas of positive self-concept, active and adoptable aspects of coping problems, development of sociality through familiar relationship between the group members. Furthermore, the experience of group counseling brought positive changes in their thoughts toward others and their environments.
Through these results, we corroborated our hypothesis that the narrative therapy group counseling effectively reduced the dysfunctional belief and aggression of children.
In conclusion, this research suggests the following studies; investigating how the narrative therapy group counseling affects the ability of problem solving and a concrete change of behavior for children. Because self-awareness and aggressive aspects are the facts what is formed since preschool age children, we need to make efforts to study the narrative therapy group counseling that would be proper for the lower grades of elementary school children and preschool children.
