국내 벽지 디자인 개발(Wallpaper Design Development)에 관한 연구 : 20세기 중반 이후 개발 프로세서를 중심으로 = Studies on wallpaper design development : focused on product development process

국문 초록 (Abstract)

수 천년의 세월 속에서 발달한 과학 문명과 자본주의 사회에 살고 있는 현대인에게, 집은 단순한 거주지 이상의 가치와 의미가 있다. 경제의 고도 성장으로 인해 사람들은 풍요로운 삶을 영위하면서 얻는 만족보다 개인적인 가치를 추구하며 사는데 더 중점을 두게 되었다. 이러한 사람들의 사고 방식은 집을 꾸미는 것에 관심이 집중되었고, 실내 인테리어와 연관있는 벽지의 중요성에 대해서 인식하게 되었다. 실내 인테리어의 한 요소인 벽지는 벽을 가리는 단순한 기능뿐만 아니라 시각적인 아름다움을 표현하는데 없어서 안될 실내 장식의 중요한 구성 요소로 인식되고 있다. 특히 벽지는 다양한 질감과 색상으로 실내 공간 연출이 용이하며 다른 재료에 비해 경제적이고, 시각적, 정서적으로 안정감을 준다.
이런 벽지는 「동양에서 최초로 발명되면서 벽면의 장식이나 보온등의 목적으로 사용되었고, 이후에 '인디아 페이퍼(India Paper)'라는 명칭으로 유럽에 전해져 벽화나 타피스트리(Tapestry)의 대용품으로 사용되었다. 벽지는 종이의 발전 과정 및 인쇄(Print) 방법의 변 화와 밀접한 관계를 가지는데, 1785년 크리스토퍼 필립 오베르캠프(Christophe Phillipe Oberkamp)에 의하여 처음으로 벽지 인쇄 기계가 만들어졌고, 19세기 산업혁명 이후 다색 인쇄 및 엠보스(Emboss) 벽지가 등장하면서 벽지의 시대가 전개되었다.
우리나라의 경우 벽지 기원은 정확하지 않지만 삼국 시대부터 제지업이 발달된 것으로 추정된다. 그리고 본격적인 벽지 산업으로서의 형태는 한·일 합방 이후 수동식 기계 인쇄에 의한 평판 벽지가 최초로 생산되면서부터 본격적인 벽지 산업의 계기가 되었다.
1970년대 중반 이후부터 디자인 개념이 생기기 시작했으며, 그 이전 시기는 디자인이라는 개념이 없이 포장지나 직물 무늬를 모방(Copy)하여 즉흥적으로 제작한 것이 전부였다. 그 후 점차 생활 수준의 향상과 해외여행의 자유화로 국내 벽지업계에서 디자인의 중요성에 관한 의식을 가지게 되었다. 1990년대 초반에 고품질의 수입 벽지들이 국내 시장으로 유입되면서 국내에서는 라이프 스타일(Life Style)과 트렌드(Trend)개념이 접목된 디자인이 개발되었다.
최근 신도시의 형성과 대규모 주거 단지의 확산으로 인해 주택의 획일화·고층화·고밀도의 아파트 문화가 형성되었으며, 현대인들은 획일화된 주거 환경에서 벗어나 쾌적하고 안락한 공간을 원하고 있다. 그러한 인간의 욕구 충족을 위해 생활 양식의 변화를 가져왔고, 최근 개성 있는 자신만의 공간 연출을 원하는 사람들이 늘어나면서, 벽지는 실내 공간 표현을 위한 실내 인테리어 분야의 주도적인 역할을 하게 되었다. 따라서 벽지 디자인도 급속도로 발전하고 국내 벽지 시장 또한 성장을 거듭하고 있다. 반면 벽지 업체간 지나친 경쟁과 과다한 디자인 생산으로 제품 생산 원가 상승 현상을 가져왔으며, 산업 현장에서 일할 벽지 전문 디자이너의 부족 현상과 업체간의 획일화된 디자인 및 일부 외국 벽지 모방 현상은 해결해야 할 문제점이 아닐 수 없다.
국내 벽지 수요는 점점 늘어나고 있지만 관련 자료와 연구가 미약한 편이다. 이런 시점에서 국내 벽지 디자인에 관한 기본적인 이론과 벽지 디자인 개발을 위한 실무 과정 연구는 벽지 디자인의 중요성을 재인식하는데 의의가 있다고 생각된다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Over centuries, for modern people who live in scientifically developed culture and in capitalism, houses are above just living place both in worth and meaning. People like to put greater emphasis on worthwhile lives than living rich lives through economic development. The way of thinking of these kind of people let them interested in decoration of their houses, and made them be aware of the importance of the wallpaper related to interior decoration. Wallpaper, a part of interior decoration is passed as functioning to cover the wall only and an important element of the interior decoration necessary for visual beauty, as well. Especially, wallpaper can change the mood of the room with various materials and colors easily. And compared with other materials it is very economical and it can makes us feel visually or emotionally comfortable.
With this wallpaper being invented first in Orient, it was used for the purpose of decorating walls or warming. Later it was spread to Europe as the name of 'India paper', and it was used as a substitute for wall painting or tapestry. It is connected with the developing process of the paper and the change of the printing way very closely. Its printing machine was first invented by Christophe Phillipe Oberkamp in 1785. Colorful printing and Emboss wallpaper came after the Industrial Revolution in the nineteenth century.
In our country, we cannot know the origin of the wallpaper, but we guess the paper industry made a progress after the age of three Empire in our history. Full-scale wallpaper industry made a start after the Japanese annexation of Korea with sheet wallpapers being produced by the first hand-feeding printer. The idea of "Wallpaper design" began from the middle of the 1970s. Because we have no idea of 'design' before that time, we designed improvisedly with the copy of pattern in wrapping paper or fabric. That was all we could. After that, the improvement of the standard lives and the easy world travel made domestic wallpaper industries know the importance of the design. With importing the wallpaper with high-quality in designing in early 1990s, our country developed the design with combination of "Life Style" and "Trend".
Recently, due to building of new cities and spreading of large-scale residential districts, the standardization of the house scale, higher and dense apartment culture, was prevalent. Now. modern people want to enjoy the comfort and laziness from uniformed living place. That kind of human desire brought about change in the way of life, and nowadays, as the population of the people who want to express themselves through interior decoration are growing, the wallpapers have played a leading role in the field of the interior decoration. As a result, the wallpaper design business is progressing rapidly, and domestic wallpaper market is growing over and over again. On the other hand, excessive competition among wallpaper businesses and designing too many wallpapers raised the cost price. Additionally, the lack of the wallpaper designers in that business, uniformed design among the businesses and the copy of the design of foreign wallpaper are the problems to solve.
There are a lot of domestic wallpaper industries but there are few reference books concerned and studies. "At this time, basic theory about domestic wallpaper design and studies on practical business for wallpaper product development are meaningful to have a new understanding of the importance of wallpaper designer." I think.
