ABSTRACT
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of the forest healing program about the personality cultivation of elementary students. For this study, fifth grade students in one of the elementary schools at Yang-pyeong city were sampled. Once a week for a total five weeks the students participated in that program and the author compared the changes to the psychological, social, moral, and physical level in students, pre-program and post-program.
The school violence comes to be serious social problems recently, because the urbanization prevent students from contacting nature and the computer games like promoting virtual violence are open to them frequently.
To solve these problems, the school needs to reinforce the humanity education programs that could change from their abnormal behavior to desirable one and could induce their inherent positive abilities.
In Japan, there happened to be a similar situation 10years ago. The Japanese government planned to adapt the forest healing program to prevent the violence in the school. For this reason, they have studied and researched the effects of forest experience in many ways. This study compared to adduct the significance and influence of the forest healing program through confirming the improvements of psychological, social, and physical abilities, and the enforcement of moral abilities on the basis of the Japanese studies.
The experimental group is composed of fifth grade students in one of the elementary schools in Gyeongi-do. This study has performed to check psychological, social, moral, and physical changes between before and after forest healing program. The results of this study were followings.
Firstly, the scores before and after forest healing program for the hypothesis as “The forest healing program(abbreviation: the FHP) may improve the students’ social and psychological comfort” were 4.89 and 5.08, respectively, which means the program can improve 0.19 scale. Secondly, the scores before and after the test for “The FHP may affect the students’ moral behavior” were 4.85 and 4.99, respectively, that means the program improve 0.14 scale. Thirdly, the scores before and after forest healing program for “The FHP may improve the students’ physical ability” were 4.61 and 4.79, respectively, which means the program can improve 0.18 scale. These results indicate the FHP can be used to improve the psychological and social abilities, to enforce the moral behavior, and to develop the physical activities.
This study is composed of four chapters: The backgrounds and purposes of this study is introduced in chapter 1. The theories and study histories are summarized in chapter 2. The hypotheses are proposed at chapter 3 “Methods” to confirm the effect of the FHP and the contents of the program and survey materials are described. The significances of the study are verified at chapter 4 “Results and Discussion” The conclusion and proposals are in chapter 5.
This study has emerged as a serious social problem of the school violence in the necessity of adopting measures to recognize the students' maladaptive behavior changes to the desirable direction, or risk measures for the prevention and response of students with potential factors for the FHP to improve the ability of the psychological and social effects, and the effect of the strengthening of the moral faculties, and the improvement of physical abilities, and presented a program using verified.
The results of this study will be used as the basic reference to develop more effective programs to solve the school violence by using the forest healing program that could develop the personality cultivation of the elementary student.
