Cheonbul images were produced in large numbers both in paintings and sculptures in India, Xiyu(the Western Regions), and China from the advent of Buddhism. Even in the Korean Peninsula, they were made continuously throughout the Three Kingdoms Period and the Joseon Period.
Cheonbul images made during the Unified Silla Perioddisplay a form hardly found among those made during either the Three Kingdoms Period or the Goryeo or Joseon Dynasties, or in other Buddhist countries outside the Korean Peninsula. Thus, Cheonbulimages are important for scholars of the history of Buddhist arts in both the Three Kingdoms Period, concerning which only a small number of literary materials or artworks remain, and in the Goryeo and Joseon Periods.
The clay Buddha(420 AD) carvedon the southern wall of CaveNo. 169 of Bingling Temple, Gansu Province, China has been referred to as the earliest of the extant Cheonbul images. However, this study notes that Cheonbul had already appeared in Buddhist scriptures written around the 1st century and assumes that Buddha images, which were repeatedly kept in a small shrine next to a tower in Gandhara, were the origin of Cheonbul images. Cheonbul images, which were first produced in Gandhara, spread to Xiyu. Cheonbul images in cave temples in Xiyu and China were first made on the walls and were gradually made even on the ceilings, inspiring solemnity among onlookers.
Sculptured Buddha images, including Cheonbul images, were introduced to the Korean Peninsula almost simultaneously with Buddhism. They influenced local Buddhist art from the beginning, as can be ascertained by the fact that the Standing Gilt-bronze Buddha Image inscribed with the year of Yeonga(an era name used by Goguryeo 7th year=539 AD), which is the oldest Buddhist artwork to have been discovered in Korea, is associated with a Cheonbul-based religion. The introduction of Cheonbul images to the Korean Peninsula during the Three Kingdoms Period provided the basis for the production of many such images during the Unified Silla Period.
Cheonbul images can be divided into two types, according to their composition: (A) Buddha images plus pattern(with patterns laid between the Buddha images) (B) Buddha images plus pagoda(Buddha images and pagodas being placed alternately), all of which were designed to be mounted on pagodas.
Most of them were made in Gyeongju between the late-7th century and mid-8th century. The location of Gyeongju was associated with the need for financial political support, as ascertained by the fact that roof tiles dating back to pre-Unified Silla have been unearthed from all the temples associated with Cheonbul images. It is assumed that stones used to make Cheonbul pagodas were supplied from tile kilns closely associated with the royal family. The existence of Cheonbul pagodas in Ulsan and Cheongdo, but not in Gyeongju, is attributable to the fact that Ulsan was an important port and maintained a close relationship with Gyeongju, that Cheongdo was on a major path leading to Gyeongju, and that the local residents there were mobilized for construction work carried out in the capital.
This study also found that the Cheonbul images made during the Unified Silla Period were associated with tantric Buddhism in the early period, as a result of a comparison made with a group of rock-carved Buddha images in Namsan, Gyeongju, with the focus on Gwanbul sammae haegyeong, a relevant scripture.
Although the Cheonbulsang made during the Unified Silla Period have been neglected, they are nonetheless important materials for those studying the history of Buddhist arts, as they display the originality of the country in which they were made, since nothing similar has been found elsewhere.
