1930년대 우리나라 재즈송에 관한 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

재즈송은 우리나라의 대중가요에 미국의 팝송이나 재즈, 프랑스의 샹송, 라틴음악 등의 요소가 결합된 형태의 음악으로서, 1930년부터 등장하기 시작하여 일제가 적성국의 음악이라 하여 재즈를 금지시켰던 1940년까지 약 10년간 나타났던 우리나라 대중가요의 한 갈래로 알려져 있다. 본 논문은 이러한 재즈송의 발생에 영향을 끼쳤다고 할 수 있는 재즈의 유입과 수용과정, 그리고 재즈송의 발생과 특징에 대해 알아보고 재즈송에 나타난 재즈적인 요소를 분석하여, 재즈송의 음악사적 가치와 재즈송이 갖고 있는 한국 재즈 출발점으로서의 가능성에 대해 알아보기 위한 연구이다.
본 연구는 한국 대중가요 초기의 모습과 관련된 논문과 서적을 중심으로 진행되었으며, 재즈송에 나타난 재즈적인 요소를 찾아내기 위해 1930년대 후반에 발표된 곡들 중 '청춘계급(靑春階級)'과 '다방의 푸른 꿈', '바다의 꿈'을 선정하여 형식, 화성, 선율적인 측면을 나누어 분석하였다. 그 결과 스윙 리듬, 빅밴드 스타일의 편곡, 그리고 블루노트 등의 재즈적인 요소들을 공통적으로 발견할 수 있었다. 또한, 가사에서 나타나는 이중적인 화법이나 블루노트를 통한 우울한 정서의 표현은 미국의 흑인 노예들이 블루스 음악에서 인간적인 슬픔, 고뇌, 절망감 등을 표현하던 방식과 유사하다는 것을 알 수 있다. 재즈송에서 나타나는 이러한 재즈적인 요소들은 재즈송이 비록 본격적인 재즈는 아니었다고 하나, 재즈의 영향을 받아 만들어진 음악의 형태라는 사실은 의심의 여지가 없어 보인다. 또한 이는 재즈송이 갖고 있는 한국 재즈 출발점으로서의 가능성을 보여준다고 할 수 있겠다.
우리나라의 대중음악은 길지 않은 역사 속에서도 양적·질적으로 상당한 발전을 이루어 왔으며, 그 속에서 한국의 재즈 역시 정통 재즈에서부터 타 장르와의 융합을 거친 모던 재즈의 형태까지 다양한 스타일로의 발전을 모색하고 있다. 이러한 발전의 근간에 있다고 할 수 있는 재즈송이 그랬듯이 우리가 가진 고유의 정서를 바탕으로 하여 세계 각국의 음악들을 수용하고 결합하려는 노력을 이어간다면 한국의 대중음악은 더 큰 발전을 향해 나아갈 수 있을 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

A jazz song is a form of music that the elements of American pop song, jazz, French chanson or Latin music are incorporated into Korean popular song. This is known as one of Korean popular music genres that had existed over a decade from 1930 to 1940, as it was banned by Japan in 1940 on the ground that it was music from hostile countries. The purpose of this study was to examine the inflow and reception of jazz, and the background and characteristics of jazz songs. And it's also meant to analyze jazz songs from a perspective of jazz harmonics in an effort to shed light on the value of jazz songs in the history of music and their possibility as the beginning of Korean jazz.
Articles and books on the initial stages of Korean popular music were analyzed to find out about the pervasive trend in Korean popular songs in the 1930s, the inflow and reception of jazz and the background and characteristics of jazz songs. Three were selected from among the jazz songs that were released in the late 1930s, and the form, harmony and melody of the songs were analyzed. The three songs were respectively titled "The Youth Class," "Coffee Shop's Blue Dream" and "The Dream of the Sea." As a result, the unique elements of jazz were found in these songs such as swing, arrangement of big band style and blue note. Besides, the way of describing melancholy sentiment in the lyrics through dual speech or blue note is similar to that of representing human sadness, agony or despair in the blues music of American black slaves. Indeed, there are definitely jazz-like elements in the jazz songs, and it couldn't seem to be denied that the jazz songs were a form of music that was affected by jazz, even though the jazz songs couldn't be regarded as standard jazz. And it seems to imply that the jazz songs might be the beginning of Korean jazz.
Korean popular music has made a great development both in quantity and quality, though the history of it is not that long, and there also have been diverse efforts to develop Korean jazz of different styles including standard jazz and modern jazz that is combined with other genres. Indeed, the jazz songs could be said to lay the foundation for the development of Korean jazz. Like the case of these songs, it's required to receive music from various countries in the world and to incorporate it into Korean music in a manner to play up unique Korean sentiment. That will make a contribution to another great development of Korean popular music.
