    The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the effect of consumer perception on the direct drinking rate of the tap water and to estimate the economic value of tap water quality improvement using averting behavior method and contingent valuation method.
    The watershed areas of this study are Geum River, Nakdong River, and Pyeongrim Dam where green algae have occurred recently and frequently.
    The survey subjects were male and female adults over 20 years of age, mainly household heads with their income or their spouses. Between January 18, 2016 and April 18, 2016 a survey based on the face approach to 1,500 people was conducted.
    By analyzing whether consumers' subjective perception of tap water quality affects direct drinking of tap water, we found that the persons who think that tap water quality is good are more likely to drink tap water directly. However, people who have high incomes and those who think that it is dangerous to drink tap water are more likely to not drink tap water directly.
    The Tobit model was used to analyze whether subjective perception of quality of tap water affects defensive expenditure. The people who think that drinking tap water will cause harm to their health and those who have experienced odors in tap water during the past year are found to spend a lot of defensive expenditure.
    Among the tap water quality recognition factors the more people think that they smell in tap water, the more they have defensive spending. In other words, we can say that the persons who perceive the smell in the tap water or who have experienced the smell pay a lot of defensive expenditure in order to avoid the smell.
    Through out the advanced water treatment project when the smell which was not removed by usual water purification method is gone and the water quality was improved, the willingness to pay was higher as the household income, the age, and education level were higher. However, the people who think that the offered amount is high or smell exists in tap water, and those who experienced smell, were less willing to pay for water quality improvement.
    This means that people who think that there exists odors in tap water or who have experienced odors in tap water do not believe in government even though water quality is improved by the success of the advanced water treatment project and they are going to use the water purifier or bottled water that they have used in the meantime.
    As a result of estimating the marginal benefit of improving the water quality by using the avoidance behavior approach method, the calculated marginal benefit for reducing the number of smells in tap water is 50 won, and the response to the reason for not drinking tap water is reduced by one. The calculated marginal benefit is 6,120 won Respectively.
    Using the Hanemann RUM model in the conditional value method, the marginal benefit for the improvement of the water quality of the model without covariates was estimated about 2,810 won.
    The marginal benefit of improving water quality by separating each water system model was also estimated among 2,579 won and 3,000 won.
    The marginal benefit of the Nakdong river system where water quality accidents occur frequently was slightly lower than other water systems.
