근대 조선의 수학여행과 기행문 쓰기의 방법 = School Trips during the Modern Chosun and the Method of Travel Essay Writing

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper deals with the characteristics of articles related to destinations for school trips as represented in Korean textbooks published by the Japanese Government-General of Korea in the 1920s and considers the meanings of travel essays published in school magazines and newspapers by referring to travel guides and textbooks. In the articles and travel guide, Japanese orientalism applied. However, in Simundokbon (時文讀本) and Jungdeungchoseoneojakmun (中等朝鮮語作文), we found a description of beauty, harmony between places and sensibility, and gazing upon subjectivity, all of which are difficult to find in textbooks and travel guides of the Japanese Government-General of Korea. The method of travel essay writing by students can be understood by referring to textbooks by a private individual who lived during the age and by investigating the consciousness of the opposition of students against colonial discourse as contained in their books. Students deviate from the ideology of the textbook while reproducing the places in the travel essays. They depict criticism, grief and shame or describe scenes in which praying for the Chosun people is done while viewing the history of the Chosun and the colonial reality. This type of writing intentionally exposes aspects which are concealed by the geopolitics of the Japanese Empire surrounding investigations of historic spots and school trips. And the writings reconstitute the publicness of school trips. Therefore, the travel essay can be thought of as the result of the ex-appropriation of textbooks published by the Japanese Government-General of Korea during the negotiation and competition between ideologies.
