    Rolling stock, after a certain period of the time or after a certain distance, go through a regular maintenance inspection in order to ensure safe operation of the railway.
    The vehicle’s wheel, one of the most important parts of the railway, is also checked periodically for safety.
    In the past, visual inspection, damage inspection, and penetrant inspection were all used as test methods to find any abnormalities with the vehicle’s wheel. But after the recent introduction of high-speed vehicles, ultrasonic flaw detector has applied for testing
    Recently, freight train deviation accident because of wheel broken in Gyeongbu Line between Sintanjin – Mepyo station (’16.3.11.) happened. Also, there was KTX train delay accident in Jeolla Line between Jeonju – Sinri station (’14.8.14.). These train accidents and delays raised doubts about the test methods for vehicle’s wheel.
    High-speed rail vehicles have been using Ultrasonic testing from ____. But many rolling stocks such as Saemaul, Mugunghwa and freight train began to apply ultrasonic testing in 2014, because of those accidents in order to ensure safety of Vehicle wheel.
    Due to a limited budget and time constraints, the first freight wheel ultrasonic flaw detection equipment utilized a type of Vertical flaw detection method.
    Unfortunately, the Vertical flaw detection method was a problematic because of unreliable test results and the occurrence of wheel-shaped blind spots.
    At first equipment inspections of rolling stock axles used a vertical flaw detection method. After that, eventually, PA ultrasonic flaw detection methods were applied in order to acquire reliability and maintain the efficiency inspection.
    In the same way, it is necessary to examine the possible benefits of PA ultrasonic flaw detection method on the vehicle’s wheel.
    Upon the analyzing rolling stock wheel’s standard, type of freight wheel derailment, and the background of rolling stock wheel ultrasonic flaw detector installation, this paper suggests an application of PA ultrasonic flaw detector on a wheel in order to ensure the reliability of the wheel ultrasonic flaw detector.
