The rapid development and popularization of artificial intelligence (AI) are driving transformative changes across various industries. Generative AI technology is being adopted in diverse fields based on its convenience and efficiency, expanding its applications to creative domains such as design and content creation. Companies are integrating generative AI into their workflows to enhance productivity, but concerns about potential job reductions in certain industries have also been raised. In this changing landscape, the ability to effectively utilize generative AI has emerged as a key determinant of future competitiveness, and there is a growing emphasis on research to creatively integrate it into design processes, including in the fashion industry.
This study focuses on these changes by selecting motocross apparel as the design development target and exploring ways to enhance productivity and reduce time and costs through the integration of generative AI and 3D tools. To achieve this, the study examined the development process of AI, analyzed generative AI tools by type, and selected appropriate tools for each design stage. Furthermore, it analyzed the features of motocross apparel, including silhouettes, materials, colors, graphics, and details specific to different brands, to establish a foundation for design development.
The design development process was based on the FEA(Functional, Effective, Aesthetic) model. First, after analyzing the requirements for motocross apparel, three concepts combining streetwear and motocross apparel were derived and visualized using ChatGPT and Midjourney. Subsequently, a survey was conducted with 84 domestic motocross riders to finalize three designs. The selected designs were materialized using Clo3D, with initial designs refined by applying graphics generated with Midjourney. Finally, images created with Clo3D and Cinema4D were further enhanced for realism using Krea AI, and a dynamic presentation was completed by visualizing them through Gen-3.
The study aimed to develop generative AI as a creative tool that can be controlled according to user intent. The findings reveal that generative AI significantly enhances productivity by enabling the rapid generation and visualization of design ideas. However, achieving desired outputs necessitates the careful tuning of prompts and parameters. Additionally, the combination of generative AI and 3D tools produced remarkable synergy, allowing for the completion of intricate details and streamlining traditionally time-intensive tasks such as video production. Realistic images generated by generative AI were effectively utilized for consumer preference surveys, enabling a rapid understanding of consumer needs and the quick identification of market-aligned designs.
As generative AI tools continue to evolve, designers are expected to develop new skills to effectively harness their potential. These include prompt engineering, directing, and creatively analyzing and applying the latest trends in generative AI. This study proposed a method to integrate generative AI and 3D tools into the design process, using motocross apparel design development as a case study. While generative AI is still in its early stages and faces several limitations, this research serves as a foundational exploration of its potential and applicability. Future studies are expected to further enhance design productivity and establish generative AI as a creative and innovative tool through improved tools and new approaches.
