The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index is a simple surrogate marker of insulin resistance, whereas high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) is a representative biomarker of systemic inflammation. This cross-sectional study was conducted using data from the 9th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES, 2024) and included Korean adults aged 20–39 years. Pearson correlation analysis and complex sample multiple linear regression analysis were performed to evaluate the association between the TyG index and hs-CRP. Additional stratified analyses were conducted according to sex, obesity status, and abdominal obesity status.
The TyG index showed a significant positive association with ln(hs-CRP) in the unadjusted model and in models adjusted for selected covariates. However, after further adjustment for body mass index (BMI), the association was no longer statistically significant, suggesting that BMI may mediate the relationship between the two variables. Stratified analyses by sex and abdominal obesity status revealed no significant associations. In contrast, a significant positive association between the TyG index and ln(hs-CRP) was observed among individuals with obesity.
These findings suggest that obesity may play an important role in the relationship between insulin resistance and systemic inflammation among young Korean adults.
