With economic development and information expansion, people's demands are shifting from material to spiritual levels, placing increasing emphasis on emotional and cognitive satisfaction. Emotional expression requires the evolution and innovation in traditional artistic elements such as color, light, and shadow, while texture enhances sensory experience through "synesthesia" or "haptic perception," addressing the growing demand for diverse emotions and sensations in modern society. Therefore, research on the emotional imagery of "texture" holds significant potential for further exploration.
With the advancement AI technology, we cannot overlook its enhanced capabilities in many fields, which may also include the element of texture. Artificial intelligence offers new opportunities and possibilities for AI-driven texture research. Based on the expression of emotional intent, AI can reproduce and maintain similar sensations, and through continuous creative generation, it can significantly enhance the expressive and functional value of texture in today's era. This can address issues such as homogenization, cost, and efficiency.
To more comprehensively explore the emotional imagery of AI-generated textures, this study not only investigates synesthesia and empathy as external dimensions of texture, but also introduces the concept of “materiality” to examine its intrinsic value—namely, the fundamental properties and inherent meanings of texture. Drawing on theoretical frameworks such as Greenberg’s medium theory, the study concludes that the irreplaceable qualities of texture are “repetitive patterns” and “tactile synesthesia”. These theoretical insights offer a multidimensional analytical framework for further exploration.
This paper, titled *A Study on the Impact of AI-Generated Textures on Emotional Imagery*, is organized into five sections. The introduction analyzes prior research, theoretical background, objectives, methodology, and scope, while also explaining the necessity of generative AI in texture studies. Chapter 2 defines and conceptually elaborates on texture and its emotional imagery, establishing the foundational theoretical framework for the research.
Chapter 3 clarifies the research value of texture's "materiality" as a medium and its pathways of image expression through case studies of textures across various fields, expanding the relationship between texture, AI, and medium aesthetics theory. Chapter 4 presents emotional imagery tests using the ViT deep learning model to determine whether AI-generated textures possess expressive characteristics akin to emotional imagery. Chapter 5 concludes with a summary of the experimental findings and discusses future research directions.
