The general hospitals of Korea are being run in the flow of age to seek for active researches and alternatives against market opening and management based on service. Under the circumstances that opening a medical market is inevitable, general hospitals can no longer develop and increase their ability by means of prior authoritative and medical exam and treatment-oriented conventional management system.
Recently, general hospitals are seeking strategic ways preventing diseases, extending lifetime, enhancing quality of life as keeping pace with popularization of medical information to actively deal with the changing demand of customers. Hospitals are no longer the place treating only diseases.
General hospitals have a strong vertical status system, so communication is not easy, sharing information, education, carrying out a team treatment, revolution, either. Under this circumstances, building a service management administration system is not only the demands of the times but also a mountain to go over.
This study focus on checking up the service management administration system and presenting the direction to forward after conducting case studies targeting typical general hospitals in the excellent hospital of service quality in Korea. Details are as follows.
Firstly, some general hospitals adopt respecting life and increasing the health of the nations as their motive of management. Others do hospital studying state-of-the-art medical science, hospital loving patients like their family, hospital moving patient's mind, hospital trusted and serving.
Secondly, all the general hospitals participated in the subjects of study counted customer satisfaction and patient-centered service as their most important practice element, as a service management strategy in administration system factors.
They are using CSI investigation method, monitering method, a suggestion box, survey method as a evaluation system. Some hospitals are using internal evaluation, external evaluation and ERP system, conducting employee education to foster the development of human resources. Several hospitals were selected as excellent new union and management culture businesses. Another was selected as the first example hospital, so it introduced a new working and education system through the new paradigm and built a lifetime study system, operating a new paradigm in-house instructor cultivation as well as new paradigm in-house instructors forum. As for service management system, it is thought much of that operating a service full charge team, service education team, operating a service academy besides service propulsion committee, medical institute evaluation ready committee.
Thirdly, among the service management administration system, The results of service management practice area are drawn as divided into the medical examination and treatment, nursing service, support service, administration service, facilities service, culture service, society service, internal customer service, and so forth.
In terms of medical exam and treatment, all the hospitals think much of treatment improvement and building treatment system centered on patients, and there are differences between items. As for nursing service, the majority of general hospitals think much of nursing guidance service, sensibility service. As for support service, improving the service of the point of contacting customers is thought much of. In case of administration service, most hospitals think much of medical exam and treatment and guidance. In the light of facilities service, all the hospitals devoted their energies to proving up-to-date service, expanding convenience facilities for patients as well as building up environment around the hospital. In case of culture service, all the hospitals held concerts for patients, provided moving libraries, regular movie showings. In the light of society service, all the hospitals participated volunteer activities in the local community. As for internal customer service, benefits package and employee participation system are carried out and specific program for increasing satisfaction level of employee as internal customers, besides, all the hospitals were developing program and studying for customer satisfaction.
Finally, general hospitals are required to build up service management administration system and practice to be more competitive. As this study shown, in order to improve the level of service management administration system, with presenting the comprehensive directions, consistent practice will and efforts checking up the problems and presenting the alternatives must be followed through dividing all the service into the medical exam and treatment service, nursing service, supporting service, administration service, facilities service, culture service, society service, internal customer service, and other services.
With this, this study left a problem to be solved which is required to established service management theory suitable for general hospitals due to the shortage of prior study concerning service management in hospital. In addition, there is another problem to be solved which is caused by lack of experts and professional departments regarding service management in general hospital not in university hospital in affiliation. Hereafter, it is hoped that more study checking the problems concerned with and presenting alternatives will be followed.
