This study aims to examine the changes in the production conditions of bronze mirrors of Goryeo and Joseon Dynasty including the activities of craftsmen, production techniques, and materials, focusing on the use and function of mirrors in everyday life, which have not been studied in the past. Furthermore, this study attempted to examine the changes and characteristics of Goryeo and Joseon Dynasty. Since the Goryeo Dynasty, the demand for mirrors had increased rapidly due to the increase in the number of people who used the mirrors, and there had been a change in the production system that made mirrors to meet the demand. Moreover, the act of looking in the mirror in Confucian culture and order not only implied various social meanings but also continued to use mirrors in Confucian living norms such as Korean rites of passage(冠婚喪祭) .
The craftsmen of the Goryeo and Joseon Dynasty specialized in mirrors in the state-run and private handicrafts. In the state-run workshop, a necessary mirror was produced by belonging to a professional craftsman(鏡匠) who produced mirrors to central institutions including 工曹, 尙衣院 and 掌冶署. In addition, a professional craftsman was placed in the institutions that needed mirrors such as the ritual, the military institutions, to produce mirrors. The mirrors for various rituals, which were performed at the national level, and the mirrors for the envoys who visited Goryeo and Joseon, and the mirrors for trade, and the mirrors as accessories of military equipment were produced by them.
The craftsmen who produced mirrors since Goryeo were active in the capital city of Gyekyeong(開京) and Seokyeong(西京) , the second capital city, and it was quite active enough to produce and sell various kinds of mirrors in the state-run handicraft industry. It was understood that the officials, nobles, and merchants of Goryeo commissioned and ordered mirrors to them and traded at domestic and abroad. These production and distribution of mirrors would last until the end of the 16th century when imports of Japanese mirrors and glass mirrors began in earnest.
In the Goryeo and Joseon period, the production of mirrors was carried out in the direction of efficiency by using the production method called 再鑄 or 踏返 and the tool taken with pattern stamps for economic efficiency. This allowed the supply of the demand for mirrors that had soared. Especially the use of mirrors without patterns increased because they emphasized the practical function of just lighting the face without patterns. In addition, the use of a mirror with a handle that was used since the Goryeo period became more active, and more functional aspects such as the use of a mirror with a handle with a concave mirror and a convex mirror were emphasized.
In the mirror of the Joseon Dynasty, various phrases and letters meaning self-reflection and training were contained in the mirror pattern. The literary people of the Joseon Dynasty tried to reflect on themselves every day by looking at the mirrors. This reflects different tastes and aesthetics from the mirror reflecting the Taoist ideas of the Goryeo period, and it would be seen that the Neo-Confucian recognition system and thinking of the Joseon Dynasty were reflected in the mirrors, which is a living craft.
The mirror was used as a ritual item in Confucian order of life, and the process of preparing the mirror was also examined in detail in the funeral of the Joseon royal family. Also, in the tombs of Goryeo and Joseon Dynasty, there were examples of the funeral mirrors, which were made in small size, which could be interpreted as the funeral meaning of the mirror in relation to the book of 『朱子語類』.
