This study was conducted to develop an artificial intelligence-based elementary science education program using Makeymakey and to investigate the impact of the developed program on elementary school students' science academic emotions. For this purpose, content elements that can be used for AI-based science education were selected based on the 2015 elementary school curriculum and AI education literature developed by the Ministry of Education and the Korea Foundation for the Advacement of Science & Creativity, and a program worth 5 sessions (10 lessons) was developed by reorganizing the 6th grade science 'Use of Electricity' unit.
The subjects of the study were two 6th grade classes at S Elementary School in Seoul, Korea, and the effectiveness was analyzed by dividing them into an experimental group and a control group using a nonequivalent control group design. The experimental group applied the educational program developed in this study, and the control group applied a science textbook for comparison. To examine the changes in science academic emotions before and after the program, a science academic emotions questionnaire consisting of seven areas (positive emotions(enjoyment, interest, satisfaction), embarrassment, dissatisfaction, anxiety, anger, boredem and annoyance) was used. In addition, student interviews were conducted to analyze the results of the study quantitatively and qualitatively, and the results of the study are as follows.
First, It developed an AI-based elementary science education program using the Makeymakey. The program reorganized the contents of the 6th grade 'Use of Electricity' unit and consisted of a total of 5 sessions (10 lessons).
Second, it was found that the AI-based elementary science education program using Makeymakey improved elementary school students' science academic emotions compared to traditional science classes based on science textbooks. The experimental group showed statistically significant improvements in science academic emotions in 6 of the 7 domains after the program compared to before the program. In contrast, the control group, which received traditional science textbook instruction, showed improvement in science academic emotions in 2 of the seven seas domains. The comparison of statistical scores between the experimental and control groups showed that the experimental group scored significantly better than the control group in 3 subdomains: positive emotions (enjoyment, interest, satisfaction), boredom, and dissatisfaction. In addition, the analysis of student interviews provided supporting evidence for the quantitative results, showing that students' interest in science and interest in artificial intelligence increased after the "Uses of Electricity" unit.
Based on the above research results, the AI-based elementary science education program using Makeymakey can improve elementary school students' science academic emotions, and this study is expected to be used as an example of using AI in science curriculum in the future.
