    본 연구는 체육의 개념 및 명칭의 변천과정에 대한 연구로서, 체육이라는 용어의 정체성과 그 의미를 시대적으로 새로이 조명하는 데에 그 목적이 있다. 이와 같은 목적을 달성하기 위하여 본 연구는 각 대학의 대학안내서 및 체육에 관한 각종 문헌 등을 참고하여 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다.
    첫째, 고대 그리스는 고대 체육의 전성기로서, 이 시대의 체육 개념은 심신의 조화적인 발달을 위한 바람직한 인간 형성이 교육의 주요 개념으로 나타나고 있으며, 체육에 대한 명칭은 뚜렷하게 대표적인 것은 없었으나 Gymnasium, Palaestra 등 체육 장소와 관련지어 표기하는 시대였다. 호메로스 시대 체육의 최고 목표는 "행동의 인간"으로 발달시키는데 있었으며, 전쟁에 필요한 자질, 즉 힘, 지구력, 용기 등이 중요한 요소로 생각되었다. 다음으로 스파르타 체육의 개념 및 목적은 심신을 조화롭게 발달시켜 유능한 국민을 만드는 이상을 떠나서는 생각할 수 없었으며, 신체를 통하여 개성을 발전시키는 데에 있었다. 로마 체육의 개념은 참다운 인간상의 추구보다는 실리적이고 직업적인 의미를 가지고 있었다. 특히 로마 말기의 체육은 직접 자기가 참가하는 체육이라기보다 관람자를 위한 관객주의(觀客主義)의 체육으로 존재하였다.
    둘째, 중세 및 르네상스 시대의 체육 개념은 금욕주의 사상과 스콜라 철학사상의 영향을 받아 신체를 죄악시하는 경향이 있었다. 그 당시 봉건 제도하의 기사체육 즉 신체 훈련을 목적으로 한 체육을 제외하고는 체육의 존재가 거의 없었다고 해도 과언이 아닐 정도로 신체 활동을 부정하였던 시대였다. 그래서 이 시대를 체육부정시대(體育否定時代) 또는 체육의 암흑기(暗黑期) 라고 부르기도 한다. 그러나 한편으로는 스포츠가 중세말로부터 근대에 걸쳐 끊임없이 발전되었다는 점에서 중세의 체육을 재평가하는 학자도 없지 않으며, 특히 기사들의 수련과정과 기사도정신(神士道精神)이 오늘의 스포츠맨쉽과 일치한다는 점에서 그 의미가 높게 평가되고 있다.
    셋째, 근대의 신체 수련 (Physical Training)이란 말은, 체육의 표기가 "Physical Education"으로써 일반화되기 이전 시대로서 체육이 체조의 의미로 넓게 사용되었다. 정신과 신체의 분리라고 하는, 2가지 체육을 지배하여 온 개념이 흔들리게 되었으며 체육에 대한 전면적인 재검토를 불가피하게 만든 시대였고, 체육의 특징인 신체 운동이 단지 대근육만의 활동이 아니라 통합적인 인간의 활동이라고 하는 사실을 인정하는 계기가 되었다.
    넷째, 현대의 체육개념 및 명칭은 다음의 4부분으로 나누어서 살펴보았다.
    1) 근대이후부터 1920년까지의 체육은 거의가 독일의 Jahn 체조와 스웨덴의 Ling체조를 중심으로 한 교육이었다. 이 당시의 많은 체육학자들은 거의가 의사들로 구성되어 있어 체육의 목적이 건강, 위생의 목적이었고, 체육에 대한 명칭은 Physical Training과 Physical Culture 등으로 불리워졌다.
    2) 1921년에서 1960년대는 Gulick, Wood, Hetherington 등이 기존의 독일의 Jahn 체조와 스웨덴의 Ling 체조에서 벗어나 놀이, 게임, 스포츠를 중심으로 한 "New Physical Education"을 주창하기 시작하였고, 1950년대 중반부터 "Physical Fitness Movement" 가 일어나 건강과 레크리에이션과 같은 영역에도 관심을 가지기 시작하는 때이다.
    3) 1961년에서 1980년까지의 체육은 Rudolf Laban과 Eleanor Metheny의 영향으로 체육학이 "Human Movement"의 개념으로 발전하기 시작한다. 이를 바탕으로 체육학이 학문성(discipline)과 직업(profession)으로 나뉘어져 연구되기 시작한다.
    4) 1980년 이후의 체육은 다양한 사회적 욕구와 프로스포츠의 발전으로 인하여 많은 일반 대중들이 선호하는 Lifetime Sport 형태로 발전하기 시작한다. 또한 체육학에 대한 명칭은 "Human Movement"대신 스포츠가 체육학 연구의 중심분야로 자리잡기 시작하였고, 기존의 체육교육보다는 스포츠과학이라는 패러다임에서 이해되기 시작하는 때이다. 따라서 이 당시의 체육은 다양한 스포츠에 관련된 것과 Lifetime sport에 관련된 레저관련 분야가 활발히 발달한다. 따라서 체육에 관련된 용어는 스포츠로 집약되면서 레저관련 용어가 빈번하게 사용되어 오고 있다.

    The purpose of this study is to investigate the evolution of concept and title of physical education across successive historical periods including Greco-Roman classical era, Middle ages, Renaissance period and Modem age. The methodology of this study is based on related literature review. Significant findings of this study is as follows;
    First, ancient Greece is considered as period of ideal development for physical education. Sports and physical activities were emphasized with high respect and enthusiasm. Such great philosophers as Socrates, Platon and Aristoteles greatly influenced the concept of physical education. The purpose of education was to develop mind and body harmoniously.
    The term of physical education was not clearly identified, but the place of physical education included such names as gymnasium, palaestra, etc. The concept of physical education in Roman period, however, was based on utilitarian and vocational meanings rather than on the cultivation of harmonious man. The Physical education in the late Roman period emphasized spectatorship instead of direct participation. Some of gladiator's sports were cruel symbols of brutality.
    Second, during the Middle Ages, the human body was considered as a sin due to the influence of asceticism and scholastics. As a result, physical activity in the middle age was of little or no importance, and physical education experienced the so-called "Dark Age". Some physical education scholars, however, reevaluated the contribution of medieval physical education in the light that physical education have been incessantly developed from the late medieval ages to the modem times. In addition, it is notable that the term of tournament and the concept of sportsmanship originate from the training of medieval knights.
    Third, the Renaissance period is characterized by return to Greek ideal of harmonious development of mind and body. Many philosophers such as Rousseau, Rables, Locks and others put emphasis on the necessity of physical education as well as intellectual training. Physical education was taught in schools for the first time in the history and the term, "gymnastics",was used for physical education.
    Fourth, the modem times were divided into four periods: 1)from the beginning of modem times to 1920 2)from 1921 to 1960 3)from1961 to 1980 and 4)after 1980
    1) Physical education from the beginning of modem times to 1920 basically composed of the Jahn's gymnastics in Germany and the Ling's gymnastics in Sweden. Many physical education professors in universities were medical doctors. Consequently, the objective of physical education emphasized health and hygiene. At this time physical education was called physical training or physical culture.
    2) From 1921 to 1960 the German gymnastics and Swedish gymnastics began to fade away and the so-called new physical education was getting popular. The new physical education was developed by such physical education scholars as Gulick, Wood, and Hetherington and stressed play, game, and sports. It was around this time that Jesse Williams defined physical education as "education through the physical."
    3) Physical education from 1961 to 1980 developed the concept of human movement, influenced by Rudolf Laban and Eleanor Metheny. The word, "human movement" was frequently used as the similar concept of physical education. Regarding academic discipline, human movement was used as a focus of study. It was around this time that the so-called movement education was popular particularly in the elementary physical education. As time goes by, however, the concept of human movement began to be under criticism because it was argued that the word, human movement is too general in meaning.
    4) Physical education after 1980 began to develop as lifetime sports resulting from preference by the masses and development of professional sports to meet different social needs. Regarding the focal study for the academic discipline, the concept of human movement was replaced by sports study. Physical education began to be understood in the paradigm called "sport science" rather than the existing "physical education". Consequently, it resulted in the occurrence of various subdisciplines such as sport history, sport philosophy, sport sociology, sport psychology, etc. At the same time, lifetime sport or leisure sport was still dominating in the field of physical education and various terms related to leisure have frequently been used.
    As conclusion, physical education has long been developed as various concepts in our history. The term, physical education was to be used due to its emphasis on education. Now physical education is centered around leisure or sport activities related to other disciplines. Looking at our future, the field of physical education still needs improvement in concept and terms.
