북한의 쇠퇴에 따른 구성원의 대응과 회복 가능성 분석 -Hirschman의 Exit, Voice and Loyalty 개념의 적용- = Analysis of Member Reactions to the Decline of North Korea and the Possibility of the Nation`s Recovery

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This essay addresses how North Koreans react to their nation`s decline and examines the possibility of recovery from the decline. Albert O. Hirschman suggests three concepts: Exit, Voice, and Loyalty, with which to study the responses to decline in firms, organizations, and states. In examining the nature and strength of autonomous forces in a recovery from a decline, exit and voice seem appropriate. However, a better explanation would be that the conditions favoring the coexistence of exit and voice are derived from the concept of loyalty. Loyalty keeps exit at bay and activates voice. Since the Korean War, North Korea has created a mechanism of loyalty in their society. In the system, members are not able to obtain exit or voice freely. North Korea, one of the world`s most centrally planned and isolated economies, nowadays faces desperate economic conditions. From the economic crisis in the 1990s, the North Korean people started to cross over the border between North Korea and China, thus creating their own economic space in the form of an unofficial market. However, although the North Koreans` reactions brought changes to the society, the Kim Jong-il regime is maintaining their very standardized political system.
