The study aims to investigate the realities and the effects of the curricula for pre-service primary English teachers in Korea and China. It also aims to make suggestions for the development of these curricula. For these ends, the following research questions are proposed:
1. What are the characteristics of the curricula for pre-service primary English teachers in Korea and China?
2. How do Korean and Chinese English teachers perceive the curricula that they experienced as pre-service primary English teachers?
3. What suggestions do Korean and Chinese English teachers make to improve the curricula for pre-service primary English teachers in Korea and China?
Four primary teacher education institutes, two in Korea and two in China, were selected, and the objectives, requirements, and content of their curricula were analyzed through document analysis. Twenty in-service primary English teachers from each country were surveyed, and six teachers from each country were interviewed with a focus on the effects of their teacher preparation program and their suggestions for the development of the curricula. The survey and the interview data were analyzed through frequency analysis and content analysis. The results of the study are as follows:
First, the curricula for pre-service primary English teachers in both Korea and China are designed to improve the competency of the teachers. The required credits for the specific major program are higher than those of the institutes in Korea. Whereas most courses offered in the Korean institutes are electives and concentrate on primary English language teaching, those in the Chinese institutes are mandatory and focus on developing pre-service teachers' English ability. As for teaching practicums, Korean pre-service teachers take part in these five times, beginning in their lower-level years. However, two practicums are required in China, with the first taking place during pre-service teachers’ upper-level years.
Second, the participants in both countries made overall positive evaluations of their competency as primary English teachers as well as of the curricula for pre-service primary English teachers. However, they assessed the specific major program and the teaching practicums relatively less positively. Korean teachers reported that there was a lack of in-depth major courses and courses to develop language competence. Chinese teachers responded that there were not a sufficient number of courses that centered on primary English teaching and on communications with native speakers.
Third, the teachers from the two countries suggested that the practicum period should be extended in order to help them integrate their learning into their teaching. More specifically, Korean teachers claimed that there should be additional in-depth major courses and English skills courses. Chinese teachers stated that there should be more courses focusing on understanding elementary school students and teaching English to them.
The research findings offer significant implications for the curricula for pre-service primary English teachers. In order to enhance the curricula quantitatively and qualitatively, the number of required credits and courses should be increased and their content should be developed further. For the improvement of the teachers' competency, courses focusing on fostering their English ability and teaching skills should be developed in a balanced way. Also, the curricula should be flexible so that the individuals can select courses according to their needs and capabilities. In addition, the teaching practicum system should be reformed to integrate theoretical learning with teaching. These changes might include prolongation of the practicum period and more effective collaboration between practicum schools and the university. Finally, local and international partnerships should be established so that teacher education institutes can exchange ideas about the effectiveness of their teacher education systems and make mutual efforts for improvement.
This study analyzed the curricula for the pre-service primary English teachers in Korea and China and suggested directions for the development of the curricula. In so doing, it provides insights into primary English education and primary English teacher education in Korea and China as well as in contexts where English is taught as a second or foreign language.
