Alcoholism has emerged as a serious social problem in Korea so that it is urgent for its government to establish a countermeasure against alcoholism. A dysfunctional and aggressive behavior of the alcoholic originated from deep inner conflicts traced back to their childhood. And alcoholism may include physical, emotional, and psychological difficulties. Thus in order to treat alcoholism, it is necessary to approach it with deeper and more fundamental perspective rather than with symptom-centered one. The author suggested in this study that might be inner chid healing perspective. The purpose of this study was to develop " the Korean-style Inner Child Program for the alcoholic" and to examine its effectiveness. Participants were the experimental group of 12 individuals(6 males and 6 females) and the control group of 6 individuals The experimental group was treated by the Korean-style Inner Child Program which had two sessions(3 hours) once a week and ten sessions(15 hours) in total for 5 weeks. To examine its effectiveness, self-acceptance of the alcoholic scale(Chamberlain, Haaga., 2001), interpersonal relationships scale(Ditsky, 2008), and social skills of problem solving scale (D'Zurilla, 1996) were administered before and after the KICP. The entire sessions of the Korean-style Inner Child Program were videotaped and photocopied to note the processes of change in recovery from the alcoholic addition. The responses of male and female groups were classified and analyzed according to the contents. The collected data conducted basic statistical analysis(frequency, percentage, average, and standard deviation) and non-parametric analysis(Mann-Whitney U test and Wilcoxon rank sum test) using SPSS WIN 17.0.
The major results from this study are as follows.
1. The Korean-style Inner Child Program had positive effects on self-acceptance. Participants' negative emotional, perceptional, behavioral expressions changed into positive ones after the Korean-style Inner Child Program had been completed.
2. The Korean-style Inner Child Program had positive effects on interpersonal relationships. There were the improvement of empathy of participant's inner child after the Korean-style Inner Child Program had been over. Especially, it was worthy to mention that their self-perception became positive and interpersonal relationships were flexible and enriched while the participants felt pains and understood their wounded inner child. There was a statistically significant difference in interpersonal relationships test after the Korean-style Inner Child Program was over.
3. The Korean-style Inner Child Program had positive effects on social skills of problem solving. Participants' social skills of positive and rational problem solving improved and their social skills of negative problem solving and impulse negligence decreased so that their overall social skills of problem solving had positive effects after the Korean-style Inner Child Program had been completed. Through the development of social skills of problem solving, participants' self-acceptance, will to inner strength and hope, and initiative of taking responsibility with courageous acts occurred.
4. The author conducted the Korean-style Inner Child Program and did contents-analysis, focused on its effects on self-acceptance, interpersonal relationships, and social skills of problem solving of the alcoholic. The daily log of the program and the work, video tapes were used for contents-analysis and two interviews were given before and after the program to examine psychologicalews wers. In addition, the author reorganized and reported the fact that theews wers of life of the participants took place in theewourse of the program in that there were the improvement of interpersonal relationships and social skills of problem solving, that is, from self-denial to self-acceptance.
This study had significances as followed.
1. From the perspective of the development of program, considering the emotional and cultural characteristics of Korean, the researcher developed and conducted the Korean-style Inner Child Program.
2. From the perspective of the structure of program, the Korean-style Inner Child Program was well structured so that it became more accessible to other therapists who had interests in treatment of the alcoholic. Thereby, practicality and effectiveness of the Korean-style Inner Child Program were secured.
3. It had a manuel for participants-tailored. There was massive compensations for its defects through pilot study of the Korean-style Inner Child Program.
4. It used both quantitative and content analysis to examine the effectiveness of the treatment program for the alcoholic.
