This study investigated the effects of a script-based intervention program for preschool children with speech sound disorders. The participants included three preschool children diagnosed with speech sound disorders. A multiple baseline design across subjects was employed to evaluate the intervention’s efficacy. Changes in speech production were analyzed by measuring the percentage of consonants correct from spontaneous speech samples collected during each session.
The results of this study are summarized as follows:
First, script-based activities progressively enhanced speech intelligibility. While all participants exhibited low articulation accuracy during the baseline phase, their performance improved immediately following the intervention. These improvements remained stable throughout the maintenance phase.
Second, script-based activities led to a significant reduction in phonological errors. Frequent errors observed in pre-intervention assessments—specifically involving alveolar fricatives, liquids, and codas—decreased during the intervention phase. The transition from misarticulation to correct articulation indicated a stabilization of the children's phonological systems.
Third, script-based activities significantly improved the percentage of consonants correct. According to the results of the standardized assessment, the Urimal Test of Articulation and Phonology, all participants showed a significant increase in word-level percentage of consonants correct in the post-test compared to the pre-test.
In conclusion, this study demonstrates that script-based activities, which incorporate situational contexts, serve as an effective intervention strategy for inducing linguistic transfer and stabilizing the phonological systems of children with speech sound disorders. These findings are expected to serve as foundational data for developing efficient intervention materials aimed at maximizing functional communication and speech intelligibility in clinical settings.
