A Study on the Role of Taekwondo Studio as a Community Cultural Space for Youth

The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of Taekwondo studio as a cultural space in the local community for young people. To achieve the purpose of the study, a closed questionnaire was used to analyze the differences between groups. According to the results of the study, young people had an active desire for cultural activities and judged that Taekwondo studio played a sufficiently positive role as a functional space for cultural activities in the local community.
According to the results of this study, adolescents who practice Taekwondo show more active interest in cultural activities than those who do not practice in recognizing cultural activities, which means that active cultural activities that can be directly implemented in participating in activities are possible. do. In other words, it can be seen that Taekwondo-gym means a role as a cultural space for young people, and suggestions for a more systematic composition are as follows.
First, Taekwondo studio should emerge as an open space for young people. The general perception of Taekwondo studio from the public has images of sports facilities such as 'a place to learn Taekwondo' and a 'place to exercise'. As culture is composed of various elements including physical education, it must become a public space that youth can find at any time in order to develop into a cultural space.
Second, it is necessary to change the perception of Taekwondo masters. The management of Taekwondo studio is the responsibility of the instructor, and the trainees tend to adapt to the curriculum or environment established by the masters. In order to develop into a cultural space for Taekwondo trainees in the local community, masters will also have to go through the steps for development while continuously asking the question, ‘How can I change Taekwondo studio?’ with an open mind.
Third, it is necessary to link with local cultural events. The greatest strength of Taekwondo is that it is a world-class sport that has been selected as a core Olympic sport while being the national flag of Korea. In Korea, apart from Taekwondo training, it has already been popularized as a brand, and there are cases in which Taekwondo demonstrations were invited to link with local cultural events. If we continue to exchange with other activities, such as providing space for local cultural events, it will be possible to build an image as a cultural space.

본 연구는 청소년의 지역사회 문화공간으로서 태권도장의 역할을 규명하는데 목적을 두었다. 연구의 목적을 달성하기 위하여 폐쇄형 설문지를 사용하여 집단 간 차이를 분석하였다. 연구결과에 따르면 청소년들은 문화 활동에 대하여 적극적인 활동 욕구를 지니고 있으면서 태권도장이 지역사회에서 문화 활동을 위한 기능적 공간으로서 충분히 긍정적인 역할을 하는 것으로 판단하고 있었다.
본 연구결과에 따르면 태권도를 수련하는 청소년의 문화 활동 인식이 수련을 하지 않는 청소년보다 더 적극적이다. 이는 곧 활동 참여에 있어 실행에 직접적으로 옮길 수 있는 능동적 문화 활동이 가능함을 의미한다. 즉, 태권도장은 청소년들에게 있어 문화 공간으로서 역할에 의미가 있다고 볼 수 있다. 보다 체계적인 구성을 위한 제안은 다음과 같다.
첫째, 태권도장이 청소년들을 위한 열린 공간으로 발돋움해야 한다. 태권도장의 일반적 인식은 ‘태권도를 배우는 곳’, 운동하는 곳’ 등과 같이 체육 시설의 이미지를 가지고 있다. 문화는 체육을 비롯한 다양한 요소로 구성되어 있는 만큼 문화 공간으로 발돋움하기 위해 청소년들이 언제든 찾을 수 있어야 할 것이다.
둘째, 태권도 지도진의 인식 변화가 필요하다. 태권도장의 운영은 지도진이 책임을 지고 있으며 수련생은 지도진이 수립한 교육과정 또는 마련한 환경에 맞추어 가기 마련이다. 지역사회의 문화 공간으로 발돋움하기 위해서는 지도진 또한 열린 마음으로 ‘어떻게 태권도장을 변화시킬 수 있을까?’ 라는 질문을 지속적으로 던지면서 발전을 위한 단계를 거쳐야 할 것이다.
셋째, 지역 문화행사와의 연계가 필요하다. 태권도의 가장 큰 장점은 대한민국의 국기인 무도이면서 올림픽 핵심종목으로 선정된 세계적인 스포츠라는 것이다. 대한민국에서 태권도는 수련과 별개로 브랜드적으로 이미 대중화되어 있고 태권도 시범 공연 등을 통해 지역 문화행사와도 연계를 한 사례를 찾아볼 수 있다. 나아가 지역 문화행사를 위한 공간제공 및 공동기획, 타 활동과의 지속적인 교류가 이루어진다면 문화 공간으로의 이미지 구축이 가능할 것이다.
