A great amount of change in information and techniques are taking place in fields of politics, economics and sciences. Therefore English becomes more important than before as an international language. In this context, early English education has been debated in Korea, and in 1997 teaching English in the elementary schools was launched.
The purpose of this study is to suggest effective and practical teaching methods to motivate learners' interest in learning English. For this purpose, Chapter Ⅱ examines the three teaching methods; the Natural Approach, the Communicative Approach and the Total Physical Response Method. In Chapter Ⅲ, I explore what the teacher's roles and qualifications are in elementary English classl. The Charpter Ⅳ covers the necessities and organizational forms of game activities, and suggests the teaching models utilizing games.
The aims of the elementary English Education is to motivate students to communicate in English, maintain their interests, and naturally learn daily expressions in English. In the light of this view, the role of teachers is more important with the development of educational materials. Teachers in elementary English class should prepare various materials, because the teacher should have techniques to lead students to learn English as a foreign language with no fear and anxiety.
One of the most effective methods is the use of games. Rhythmic games create cheerful atmosphere, interest and enthusiasm in class. It is natural to learn difficult vocabularies and sentences through games. Students may overcome language difficulties and help passive students in class. There are many kinds of games and game books available, but the effectiveness of text book is dependent upon how teachers handle them. So teacher's motivation skills are very important. Teachers should have a great deal of expertise in English teaching methodology and child psychology.
