The purpose of this study is to discover the relationship between smartphone use and engagement in other physical activities, as well as its relation to hours of sleep among adolescents in order to promote healthy lifestyle and physical development. Analyses were performed using data from Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey of 2020 collected by Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in order to compare and examine the relationships among hours of smartphone use among adolescents, engagement in physical activities, and hours of sleep.
Simple frequency analysis was performed to discover general features of the subjects and their smartphone use. Chi-square test was performed to identify the relationship among hours of smartphone use, engagement
in physical activities, and hours of sleep.
The following results were obtained using below .05 of statistical significance probability.
First, as for gender, a statistically significant correlation between smartphone uses both on weekdays and weekends and engagement in physical activities was observed in both male and female students.
Additionally, the highest rate of response was observed in “None” for engaging in physical activities within the past 7 days. As for grades, in every grade except for 3rd grade high school students, a statistically significant correlation was observed between smartphones uses both on weekdays and weekends and engagement in physical activities.
Also, the highest rate of response was observed in “None” for engaging in physical activities within the past 7 days.
Second, a statistically significant correlation between smartphone uses on weekdays and hours of sleep based on gender was discovered. For male students, the highest rate of response was observed in “3
to 4 hours” for smartphone uses, and “7 to 8 hours” for hours of sleep. For female students, the highest rate of response was observed in “more than 6 hours” for smartphone uses, and “5 to 6 hours” for hours
of sleep. As for the relationship between smartphone uses on weekdays and hours of sleep, a statistically significant correlation was observed in every grade except for 3rd grade high school students. Moreover,
the highest rate of response was observed in “more than 6 hours” for smartphone use, and “less than 8 hours” for hours of sleep in every grade except for 1st grade middle school students.
Third, a statistically significant correlation was identified between smartphone uses on weekends and hours of sleep on weekends regardles s of gender or grade. The highest rate of response was observed in “more than 6 hours” for smartphone use on weekends, and “more than 9 hours” for hours of sleep on weekends.
